5 stars From now on, only short reviews. I was completely blown away by this album. The sound is very atypical of the time; it is very lush and dense full of frantic drumming, powerful bass, lightning fast guitar and flute melodies, and great keyboards as well. All of the songs are very complex but all of the musical ideas have a nice flow to them. This stuff is not super atonal or dissonant, but dissonance is used to good effect in some spots. L'Epice and Bitonio have more musical changes throughout, with Arrakis and the title track have more of a build-up riding the same general pattern most of the time a la Magma style. The music is heavy to me, but not in the guitars are so distorted you can't even tell they're guitars anymore or screaming at the top of your lungs sort of way. THe heaviness lies in the melodies themselves; they are complex and have a dark tone to them. The flute is great and is juxtaposed nicely with the rest of the music. The drums are outstanding; you could just listen to the drums the whole album and never get bored. Just listen to the drum/percussion solo in Arrakis. Speaking of drums, the percussionist is outstanding as well. Just listen to Arrakis mp3 sample here and will get an idea of what the album is all about. Before this I mainly listened to symphonic, but this was easy for me to swallow and now I can't get enough of it. The title track serves as what is perhaps the most powerful ending to an album ever. I can't recommend this album enough!
