4 stars Long-time fans of Wishbone Ash were delighted to hear about the recent formation of Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash (MTWA). Turner and drummer Steve Upton formed the original Wishbone Ash in the late 1960s. Turner's contribution to Wishbone Ash was essential as songwriter, singer & producer, along with providing his trademark melodic bass lines. In recent years he has been involved in production work, as well as re-mastering and re-releasing earlier Ash albums. Turner decided he wanted to get back out there playing and giving fans old Ash tunes they weren't hearing from Andy Powell's Wishbone Ash (APWA). So, long being on the outs with Powell, Turner decided to form his own band, and an excellent group of musicians they are.

Most of the songs on New Live Dates, Volume One come from the 1970s Mk I and Mk II Ash catalogues, and MTWA certainly gives us the classic Ash sound, but not just a boring replication. A special treat on this album is the appearance of original Ash guitarist Ted Turner, on lap steel in the instrumental jam Flesh and Steel, and on lead guitar and vocals on his excellent song Standing in the Rain from the late 1980s/early '90s Wishbone Ash Mk I reunion period. MTWA has promised us a second volume of live music and a new studio album. Hopefully the second live volume will have some extended jams like Phoenix or The Pilgrim.
