4 stars The second Frank Zappa/ Mothers Of Invention album came just one year after the Freak Out! debut, but it is very different and surprising. Absolutely Free shows Frank Zappa as a composer first. Amazing arrangements, very ahead for their time. 1967 was the start of the Psychedelic scene, but Zappa seemed don't care about any tendency, he played what he liked to play. This record can be considered, in my opinion, a Proto-Prog album, it contains Jazzy passages, Blues-rock phrases, quirky symphonic moments... and more. Isn't it Avant-garde? Oh yes, I think it is! The lyrics are intriguing and they are an ironic critic to the American plastic society... Frank did not restrained himself, when he had something to say, he did it... with his excellent music!
