JOURNEY

1. Of A Lifetime One of the early Journey classics. George Tickner's odd phrasing on the guitar is highlited in the intro. There was something otherworldly about Tickner's playing. You can pick out where his writing ends and guitarist Neal Schon's picks up. The melody of the intro is repeated throughout the song, and Schon provides his own fireworks with a solo mid-way through. After another verse and chorus, Schon and drummer Ansley Dunbar battle each other for solo supremecy. It all ends with Tickner and Schon doubling up on the central melody.

2. In The Morning Day This is the song I proposed to my wife to. One of my favorite songs, and it shows how Journey could have retained their progressive side throughout their career. It also disproves that the band didn't write catchy vocal melodies on the early albums. The only gripe I have with it is I would have liked one more vocal passage at the end of the song. Other than that, great song.

3. Kohoutek One of the best of the early instrumentals. I may be alone, but I get a King Crimson vibe from this song. It's experimental, and it's muscular.

4. Too Play Some Music This is the attempt at mainstream rock on the album. It's a good rock song with some nice organ playing by Gregg Rolie.

5. Topaz This is the other instrumental on the album. It changes the mood to a more mellow vibe to set up the next vocal track. Some more nice writing by Tickner on this one.

6.In My Lonely Feeling / Conversations This is a slow, bluesy song that features Schon's mastery of blues guitar.

7.Mystery Mountain Another one of the classic early tracks. It ends the album on an upbeat note. There are more tasty Tickner guitar lines on this song as well.

If you are a progressive rock fan, you should have this album in your collection. Forget what you think you know about Journey if all you have heard are the radio hits. This album is full of creativity, originality, master performances, and expert song craft. American rock music just doesn't get much better than this.
