4 stars Mogwai was one of the first band to use the "quiet buildup to loud climax" technique favored by many modern post rock bands, and Young Team's Like Herod is pretty much the perfect example of this. The angry, violent explosive fury of the loud parts is awe-inspiring. The other feature track is the awesomely titled Mogwai Fear Satan, which is a very long instrumental song, but it isn't boring- instead of using it's time to showcase musical virtuosity or shove in some pointless quiet stuff, they genuinely build tension and really achieve things with their time- not to mention there's some cool flute playing here. The only real downer is With Portfolio, which might be enjoyable for about a minute, but three is just too much for this kind of song. Overall, Young Team finds Mogwai at their least formulaic and most diverse, and also their most epic. Excellent addition to any collection, and essential for a post rock fan.
