Jet Lag (Audio CD) ESOTERIC REISSUE 2010

When this emerged in spring of 1977, the musical world at least in England had changed. Not that this bothered PFM, who had spent months holed up in a mansion in Bel Air writing the music for this album. Nice work if you can get it. The result is the final album for ELP's Manticore label, restored here at last to it's original sleeve, (not pictured) and all the more beautiful for it.

This album really sounds like nothing else in the PFM canon and is characterised by an airy, woody feel redolent of the surroundings in which it was written. There is a beautiful lead Moog sound on here that I have never heard anywhere else, a beautiful tone which runs throughout the album. (It may even be the `pari' organ credited on the cover). In fact such are the album's twists and turns and light and shades that it really works as one piece.

The `woody' aspect comes from the soaring violin of American Gregory Bloch. Gone are the bombastic mellotrons and hammonds of old. There is even an occasional funky edge provided by the fretless bass department. The stunning guitar and drums of Mussida and Di Cioccio are still in full evidence, the vocals remain a matter of taste, but if you imagine a cross between Family's Roger Chapman and Peter Gabriel you might be close.

The nature of Progressive Music was that it was one giant melting pot of influences and very often an album with a unique sound such as this would emerge. It's beautifully produced, features some dazzling playing all round, and marks the `Americanisation' of PFM. They would soon return to home shores having not quite conquered the world but making a hell of a mark on audiences nonetheless.

This Esoteric reissue comes with a blistering 15 minute bonus `La Carrozza Di Hans' from Nottingham in 1976
