5 stars Review #86!

I don't usually give a rating with decimals, but 3.5/5.

Genesis was never my thing, but this album is strong (apart from the fact that Phil is on it). 'The Musical Box' has some nice vocals and flute. About four minutes in the music explodes geniusly and does the same two minutes later. Ends beautifully; with a bang. This is one of my favorite Genesis songs. Then is 'For Absent Friends', with Phil Collins on vocals. As you could have already inferred, I cannot stand him. Not as a drummer, he's amazing at that, but as a singer. His voice is so impossibly annoying, I am scared to listen to 'A Trick of the Tail'. I might not ever get to it. The next song is 'The Return of the Giant Hogweed'. While not bad, it feels a bit repetitive. Powerful ending, though. That's really all I have to say. 'Seven Stones', the fourth track, is a nice little soft rock ballad. I love the lyrics, and the music is stellar. 'Harold the Barrel' feels like a goofy Frank Zappa or Primus ditty. Only three minutes long, it is the third-shortest song on the album. 'Harlequin', at a similar length to the track before it, is much slower and softer. It has dark and pretty lyrics (if that is possible). 'The Fountain of Salmacis' has a pretty intro that surprisingly morphs into a faster and harder song. This track is some of Genesis's best. An underrated album from a great band. Prog on.
