4 stars Yes' 1977 album "Going for the One" is a stunning work of progressive rock that in the latter half of the 1970's. It showcases the band's instrumental prowess and songwriting skills. With a lineup that includes Jon Anderson on vocals, Steve Howe on guitar, Chris Squire on bass, Rick Wakeman on keyboards, and Alan White on drums, Yes delivers a masterful performance that combines intricate melodies, complex rhythms, and soaring vocals.

The album opens with the title track, a seven-minute that features a stunning guitar solo from Steve Howe and a memorable chorus that showcases Anderson's distinctive vocals. "Turn of the Century" is another standout track, with its haunting piano intro and lush harmonies that evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing. I always loved this track.

Other highlights include "Parallels," a dynamic song that features intricate guitar and keyboard interplay, and "Awaken," a 15-minute opus that builds to a powerful climax with its soaring vocals and symphonic instrumentation. Awaken is definitely be considered one of the best epics from the 70s.

While "Going for the One" may not be as well-known as some of Yes' other albums, it is a testament to the band's musical prowess and their ability to create complex, yet accessible, progressive rock. With its intricate arrangements, stunning performances, and memorable melodies, this album is a must-listen for any fan of the genre.

Overall, "Going for the One" is a near masterpiece of progressive rock that deserves to be recognized as one of Yes' finest albums. While it may not be perfect, with a few weaker tracks scattered throughout, its strengths far outweigh its flaws. I would highly recommend this album to any fan of progressive rock, and give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars!
