DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED

This was one of the first albums that was truly progressive. Made up of progressive-pop songs that have an orchestral section in between each song. Also, the opening song is completely orchestral. The orchestral section often builds on musical themes from the songs. The songs themselves are more progressive and more eerie than most of the music that was around at that time.

I'm not sure if this would rate so high without the string arrangements. Sure it's chock full of great melodies, which are highlighted by their usage in the orchestrated passages. But the songs themselves don't really stack up. The big hit, 'Nights in white satin' is brilliant, absolutely breathtaking with its mix of drama, emotion, melody and inventive arranging. 'Peak Hour' is a first class sixties rocker and 'Sunset' has quirk appeal, but mainly the other songs just feel like they are there to accompany 'nights in white satin', like it's a single with a long, extended B-side.
