SUPERTRAMP

This is the brilliant debut work of a band that would release some memorable albums and some others not so memorable as well. Let´s see why it may be considered four and a half stars, rounded to five.

One thing that must be set clear is that this album is clear a collection of amazing songs recorded by a yet non mature band. Production is also very distant from what would be seen in next albums, but even these two points does not overshadow Supertramp´s debut.

So if we have to reach the reasons of this high rating, we must talk about the songs. There are a bunch of strong compositions here which are beautiful, melancholic and, mainly, memorable. It is very hard to choose the best one, Words Unspoken and Maybe I Am a Beggar are all rich enough to postulate this position. Even sounding like ballads, they are too much over average by means of melody to get their quality and progressiveness weakened. There is also to be tasted an epic named Try Again, very good, if not excellent. But the album highlight is It´s a Long Road, a superb composition where instrumental parts presented gives us a urge of seeing this kind of song to be again composed and performed by Supertramp. Unfortunately things didn´t go this direction?

I really miss a strong follow up to this album, because it remembers me some best moments of Traffic, a band I love so much. I can´t be untouched by the softness and strong melody of songs composed and performed by kids in the beginning of their career, yet far away from those mature musicians they would be. This is how I close the reasons to rate it so high Maybe for good, maybe not; Supertramp became a totally different band; and even having released a masterpiece like Crime Of The Century as a result of their effort, I still miss what would be if their poppy side did not prevail. In this case, how would sound Breakfast in America or Famous Last Words ?
