On the Threshold of a Dream ? 1969 (3.2/5) 11 ? Best Song: Dear Diary isn't bad at all, mates.

Have you heard 'In the Beginning'? It's this short opening introduction to the album that consists entirely of wind noises and an obnoxious chime which lasts for over two minutes and an awful poem is read halfway through. That's a great song! Not 'Lovely To See You', the silly pap pop song with electric guitars and INSTRUMENTS. No, that's not going to do at all. Wahey! I like this album a lot more than ISOTLC. I hate how pompously long these album titles are. Would 'Where's Chordo?' have been such a poor alternative?

So this is the album that took their psychedelic excesses, cut them down to minuscule fragments and set them to pop tunes; took their classical excesses, cut them down to minuscule fragments and added them to the pop tunes, then decided to not work too fastidiously on the melodies for good measure. 'Dear Diary' is a grand little pop song with some interesting flutes and 'watery' singing. I like it a great deal. Why the introduction anyway? Why not just dive directly into the good songs and stuff? Oh, because just like Alan Parsons Project would do a few years from now, they needs themselves a damn concept or something.

Many of the songs here follow the formula of having soft rock instrumentation, then adding heaps of effects and humms and harmonizings and strings to make the effect punch you in the chest. It only works a couple times, like with Dear Diary or 'Never Comes the Day', but when it does, it's more than worth the price of admission (free if you are an internet pirate, sir). I like this album a decent deal. It's fun, not too important and it knows it, but could it have killed them to be more consistent?
