Bryan Ferry rushes in with a band finale. It's a comeback album and he embraces the Beach Boys softer, more intimately romantic side with predictable results. Other online critics spoke of this album like it was an epic swansong. I don't quite catch that. I can see why, though. They were probably so disgusted with the past couple records that most anything with a little wit to it would smell of a chef-d'oeuvre. Me, I don't catch all that. To me, this is simply a great, very great synth pop album. It's not much more at all. Could you ask for any more? I think you'd have to start worshipping some underground dark Lord to merit hallucinating enough to expect greatness from Ferry's 1980's musical vehicle.

And as they sat idly by, praising Lord Quoxish, they were eaten by the might of all evils. Avalon came and went, bringing with it the sweet allure of the crinkly guitar riff straight outta reggae rock with 'The Space Between'. Is it the Police? No. Is it U2? No. Is it Roxy Music? Yeah, yeah! It really blew the dog's mind, man. All I can say is that the album isn't bad. The mood, epitomized by the title track, is one of generic, but convincing remorse and bland, but partially sincere romanticism. The Keyboard washes are some stifling and pandering material that only seeks to choke and dampen the few real melodies the guy was able to muster in the first place. Your destination? I respect it. I respect this, but not enough to listen to it often. This is the sinking ship and Ferry is the violin quartet that so admirably goes down with the synth-wave he bought tickets for-the only proper thing to do.
