3 stars Jazz ? 1978 (3.4/5) 11 ? Best Song: Fat Bottom Girls

Well, this is particularly a very strange album. What the hell is up with that blabbering 'Mustapha'? It's not got enough melody for me, sir, but it's altogether much more entertaining than basically anything off of News of the World. It's also more energetic and, thank god, a far cry from the arena rock garbage. This song has very little commercial appeal and I can verily respect such a move, not saying the rest of Jazz isn't a commercial move forward, because it is. Queen sis a band of money-making players, not heart-felt artists, but they're in form, with May's guitar lines still smacking 'round hard and fast, thin and bee-like. It has 'Fat Bottom Girls'. Need I say more? THIS is the kind of pandering garbage I'd expect from Paul Rodgers and crew, only Bad Company could never in a million years be so goddamn catchy. There are actual, honest to satan hits on Jazz, too. 'Bicycle Races' is fun and jaunty, a really admirable little throwaway pop tune without much purpose just to sing and hum along to. It's also the last remnant of the Night/Day records, kindly forgetting the botched mishap with News and continuing in the soft/hard mixture of their best efforts. I can't help but feel as if the filler cheese is a little closer to neck high than any of us would hope for, but it's a leap back up in form, and Freddie's singing is tops, he's a showman after all. It wouldn't do for him to piss around like a dumbass, screaming 'baby baby baby baby ohhhhh' all the time. It's about having character, and diluted as it is, Jazz has personality.
