SABOTAGE

I have lost the count of where this album sits in their discography. Their sixth ? Something like this. It is obvious the band was tired of just being the heaviest band on the planet by now. They were starting to branch out to rock, AOR and pop a couple of albums ago. Personally, I prefer Black Sabbath, the doomsters. They spawned doom metal on their first three albums, but then moved away from that sound and scene.

Sabotage has a couple of Black Sabbath classics in the form of the excellent Hole in the Sky and Symptom of the Universe. These are hard rock/doom metal anthems. The rest of the album is more rock, hard rock and AOR focused. There is even an attempt to break into, at that time, the lucrative mainstream radio market. I am not convinced about these tracks.

But this is overall a good Black Sabbath with the two above mentioned anthems as the big highlights. But nobody can deny that Black Sabbath were a pretty multi dimentional band after listening to this album. They really spread their wings on this album. Like The Beatles once did. Think about that parallell......

Good, but not really floating my boat is what Sabotage is. 3 stars
