3 stars Listening diary 3rd February 2021: Queen - Queen (hard rock, 1973)

I think I've always preferred the style that Queen have on this album (and other early works) to their more popular albums, but the substance just isn't quite there on this one. It's not too different from Queen II, but is so clearly missing the masterpieces that prop that album up. The closest thing here to a great song is "Great King Rat", but that feels like a poor man's version of many other Mercury tunes, but is perhaps forgivable as he was clearly just developing his style on this album. The rest, like a lot of Queen deep cuts, is pretty much just filler - but perhaps less obnoxious filler than what would pad out their later albums.
