3 stars I haven't listened to this as a stand alone CD - only listened to it while watching Nosferatu, which I purchased only to discover unhappily that it didn't have the original score. That's shaped my opinion of it considerably, and is therefore the direction from which I offer this opinion.

If you watch the film with a desire to watch the film as an original whole, I think that the frantic synth sounds that run throughout the movie are a massive distraction from the film, and a really irritating anachronism - when you are watching something from the 20s you don't want cheesy 80s synth sounds jumping up and down all over it.

As an artistic experiment in composing a new score to match an old film that's fine, it's effective, even good - it's really dark and forbidding. But it should never have been released as anything but a standalone CD, and an alternate soundtrack on the DVD.

Was the original score lost? I see no reason to abandon it completely in favour of this and even if it was lost I see no reason not to include a score that is more in tune with the 20s (a classical orchestra, not synthesisers!) in addition to the Art Zoyd score
