4 stars Well, 2012 has ended and what was the outstanding album of the year in terms of the prog genre? For me (and many others it appears) it was Big Big Trains English Electric Part 1, an outstanding statement of modern prog/classic rock with a nod to the past. But what of their earlier works. This one, Gathering Speed is an overlooked gem from the days when Sean Filkins undertook vocal duties. And what an amazing diamond it is too. More melancholy than English Electric with a theme based on WW2/Battle of Britain, it is at times an achingly beautiful piece of work. Sean's vocals match the sensitive subject matter but are also robust enough when needed and necessary. As usual the songwriting is top notch and the musicianship in the premier league as is production values. Credit too to the wonderful booklet art something BBT always take great care of. If you buy this from the bands website, it costs little more than a pint of beer (London/Paris prices). Thoroughly recommended. Thanks BBT for improving the quality of my listening pleasure across your back catalog!
