3 stars Not my Favorite strawbs recording, the cover art always put me off a bit. However this record is not as bad as I originally thought it grows on you given a chance. More powerful than most strawbs LP's and certainly in the post glory days of B.N.W, Hero and Heroin and ghosts which it is closest to in sound it is never the less a pretty decent set of songs and included two fine cuts The Soldiers Tale'is by far my favorite cut on this record and is the only one that gets the hairs up on my arms.' Beside The Rio Grande' is also excellent and very rocking strawbs. I always preferred the LP's up to and including G.N.W. best so this continues in the direction that I liked least but despite this still often surprises with its musical skill. This record also boast some of the Best lyrics of any strawbs albums. This record is far stronger than Busting at the seams for- instance so its a bit of a surprise that it did so poorly in record sales. The Strawbs had made a name for themselves in the US post Hero and Heroin and I always felt they pandered a little to much to that market. Any strawbs record is better than no strawbs record in my humble opinion and although I am going to give this record a three it certainly deserves a high three in my book.
