4 stars This concert is part of the 1977 american tour, from which the official "Encore" release was compiled. The Detroit performance is quite unique: more than Electronic Rock, it sometimes sounds like Electronic Heavy Metal! "Coldwater Canyon" - the most rock-oriented track on "Encore" - retranscripts somehow this atmosphere, however very shyly compared to this concert.

The first two tracks, "Cherokee Lane" and "Monolight" are well known as they already are on "Encore". However, the following material is improvised and not present on another release. The main point concerning these parts is that Froese's guitar rarely sounded so enraged and heavy. Several moments make you wondering if you're still listening to TANGERINE DREAM. As a consequence, the audience is transported and pretty excited. Don't worry, the set also contains typical TD sequenced parts and they are very good and inspired. The style shows the band moving gradually from ambiant electronic to a more progressive rock orientation they will take on the late 70's, although not this aggressive.

The only negative point here is the average quality of the base recording. Of the american tour concert, the Detroit performance may be the most original, and simply one of the most ferocious offering by the band. Check it out if you enjoy "Encore", spacey guitars, or simply wish to explore a lesser-known facet of the band.
