SAWS biography
SAWS are a North American krautrock ensemble featuring former Cul de Sac drummer Chris Guttmacher, session player Rick Frystak, Brian A. Rosser and Rick Potts, co-founder of Solid Eye and the Los Angeles Free Music Society. Operating out of Los Angeles, Califonia, the band naturally get their name from their unique sound sourced from electronically-processed musical saws. These saws are performed by Potts and Rosser along with electric guitars and synthesizers, joined by Frystak on bass and Mellotron and Guttmacher on drums and percussion. SAWS breezily flit between krautrock and post-rock modalities, evoking Can and Tortoise in their live-in-the-studio improvised jams, which are subsequently produced by each member and remixed by Frystak into finished pieces.

The quartet's self-titled debut CD was released in 2005 via Frystak's In Tone Music label. SAWS later contributed the previously unreleased ten-minute track "The Sawintologist" for the fifth volume of Wire magazine's Below the Radar series in 2010.
