TUESDAY AFTERNOON

(The First Review.) A very good and charming single of its (post-Summer of Love) time. Two fine songs from the Moodies' groundbreaking breakthrough album Days of Future Passed (1967). 'Tuesday Afternoon' was even considered a potential premiere single before or at the time of the album's release, but the now ultra-famous 'Nights in White Satin' was chosen instead - deservedly, of course. This another Justin Hayward song, though not necessarily as achingly beautiful as e.g. the slow 'Dawn is a Feeling', is very effective and enjoyable, somewhere between uplifting and moody. The melodies are gorgeous and there are plenty of mellotron. The song itself has no orchestration even in the album, they come after it, using the melody lines of the faster parts ("I see my self-reflection...").

'Another Morning' is a bright, innocent song by Ray Thomas, describing the children at play. Again there's nice variation in tempo, the joyous main section and the more soaring chorus "time seems to stand quite still / in child's world it always will", which is superb. Indeed one of several of his great songs.

Both songs work very well also separately, as on the album, so this really is excellent as a single. But I give five-ratings only to those with good non-album material.
