Progressive Biography

Year of birth: 1970. My earliest listening (thanks to my elder brother and sister) included bands like Saga, Asia and Yes (90125) among the more usual pop from ABBA to Dire Straits. Progressive rock was already playing a significant role when I started to buy albums of my own in the age of fifteen. MARILLION was my first object of enthusiam, but quite soon I concentrated on the classic era of prog. My favourites were GENESIS, YES, PINK FLOYD, CAMEL, RENAISSANCE, MOODY BLUES, some of King Crimson, Supertramp,Talk Talk, KATE BUSH and JANE SIBERRY (the latter not in PA). The 70's is my unquestionable favourite decade in rock, and in Prog especially. Of rock music that I listen, it's nowadays probably over 80% prog or prog-related. I listen to many types of music, from jazz and entertainment music to folk, New Age and art music (the latter is the main genre in the radio channel I listen to daily).

Here are some more long-time prog favourites: VDGG/Peter Hammill, Mike Oldfield, VANGELIS, Tangerine Dream, STEVE HACKETT, Peter Gabriel, JETHRO TULL, STRAWBS, CARAVAN, GENTLE GIANT, Gryphon, Barclay James Harvest,... And I'm finding new names all the time! I enjoy electronic, folky and jazzy music, and good pop too. As a reviewer I find the question "How progressive this music is?" far less important than "How much I enjoy this music personally?" Subgenres that I'm less interested in are Prog Metal, Heavy Prog and RIO/Avant-Prog.

As a librarian, responsible for music material, I can give my own little contribution to keep prog known to people. I have also written to the Finnish Prog Magazine COLOSSUS since 2010. Now in 2013 I'm the author of the first Finnish-language prog book describing albums by hundreds of artists from the UK, Europe (Finland excluded) and North America. The translation of the book title is "Gates of Dawn - Progressive Rock 1967-1979".
