How can one best keep track of new releases? About a year ago I started to put effort into collecting many different sources into the AwesomeProg.com (AP) database. But how to pick the most interesting releases to listen to from more than 200 new releases per month? This is an ongoing effort to chart these new releases. There is a poll for each calendar month (AOTM), and there's also a poll for each year (AOTY). The polls are open to all PA forum users, and they are hosted at AP for technical reasons. Each user can vote for their favorite releases for each month and year, including all types of releases. You do not need to register at AP in order to participate. Simply go to https://awesomeprog.com/release-polls/pa/aoty-2023?area=results-pa-ap" rel="nofollow - the poll page at AP, select your favorite releases and then post them here in this thread (please only one list per post). If you like you can also register at AP and benefit from other tools like the listening queue and wishlist which can help you to keep track of all the releases you listened to, but like I mentioned above, an AP account will never be required to participate. Currently the monthly polls have a limit of five releases, and the yearly poll has a limit of 20 releases. The limit means that for each user, only this number of releases from their list will yield points for any particular combined result list. Users can and should submit much longer lists, provided that they have that many favorite releases. Ok, so let the voting begin! To recap, here's how you participate: - Go to the poll page (link above). - Select your favorite releases (using the filters and search box). - Sort your releases. - Copy the forum code (there's a link/textbox below your list that does that). - Paste it in a new post in this thread. - My scripts will eventually capture your list and add it to the database. - Check the results on the poll page. - At some point each particular poll will be closed (or at least a snapshot will be made), and the results will be posted in a thread in this forum. Here's some more suggestions/info for how this works: - Only put releases on the list which you really find awesome! You do not need to hit the maximum number of releases for each month/year. Each release you put in the list should be a serious recommendation. - You can and should put any release in the list that you really like, regardless of genre or prog status. By default you can select from all releases at PA (excluding singles/demos/etc), but you can remove that filter and select from all releases at AP. - From the list you submit the system will pull releases into different combined result lists, including one exclusively for non-prog releases. This enables you to focus on assembling a list of your actual favorite releases, while also making sure that people looking only for progressive music do not get annoyed by non-prog items. - Don't think of this as a competition between releases where there are winners and losers - it's not about the point "score" a release gets. Instead, think of the "winners" at the top of each list as the more popular releases, and the "losers" at the bottom as the more obscure ones. Check them out preferably, and if you like them, put them in your list! - If your favorite release is missing, please register at AP and add it yourself. Any registered user at AP can add artists and releases. You only need to add the basic data (artist name, release name, year and type), and we will add all the metadata we can find, including links to spotify and bandcamp. - If there's a problem or something is not working correctly, please drop me a PM or contact me via the AP feedback form. - Even if you do not want to submit a list yourself (yet), you can still browse the lists of other users to find cool music to listen to. |

Ow gosh, now you're very ambitious. That is, I only heard two of the albums listed for November 2023, and I'm honestly not very much inclined to explore most of those others. I already surprised myself that for the year 2023 I listened to 49 albums eligible for the AotY-poll... That's huge, to my standards, since prog is not my "main thing" anymore. There is so many music outside of prog that is as interesting (or even more...) that it is impossible for me (or I'm unwilling) to invest more listening time to things that I know I will only find average... I guess that this kind of Album of the Month polls is really for the full-time prog listeners - professional or not. ------------- The razamataz is a pain in the bum |

Well, nobody should feel bad about not listening to enough new releases. I’m currently doing that a lot, but I don’t know how long that will last. If this is not for you, then by all means give it a pass.  BTW: I actually think that for a monthly poll we should limit this to the top five releases of each user, so that is the limit I will set. Users can vote for as many releases as they like, but only the top five will be counted. |

While I tend to gravitate more towards music not in PA, I will happily come up with five when I listen to more. I want to discover more, especially as we gear up to the Album of the Year and it does get me more excited about modern music in PA (beyond my usual suspects, like Swans, cough cough, for which I need no excuse to listen to at any time). I see a few in that list that I want listen to and one that I want to re-listen to. Chromb! Cinq had slipped my mind, and that's only from November! That's one to give full spin again. I listened to Kilter's The Suspended Woman just yesterday and really liked it as well as The Snobs - À Distance. Listening to Panopticon's The Rime Of Memory now. I really like Agitation Free and want to listen to Momentum properly. I want to try Melanie Mau & Martin Schnella - The Rainbow Tree. And an Alio Die release will usually make my in PA top of the year. I had played Transcendental Geometries, but I was quite distracted at the time by things that kept coming up. And the Univers Zero I have not even listened to in full yet, and then I see the Ryoko Ono album! I especially will be interested to see December's list when it comes out. And Kraan Zoup needs a proper listen. And Masada (fan of Zorn). I spend a lot of time listening to music as I do other things, but it does compete with listening to some police related stuff. ^ If people enjoy this, I could do it for all months from now on, with a convenient way to re-use your monthly picks in the yearly poll. There's enough albums being released to choose from year-round, although december is a little bit thin. I've just checked the database, here are the numbers (all releases tagged as prog vs. all in pa):

^ I'm hopeful that various more innovative and quite unique albums will be added to PA not only for December, but November and the earlier months of 2023 before the AOTY nomination process is over. I guess despite having an official results date, if it does not prove problematic to you, people could keep amending their lists later and those results could be updated (need not be seen as such a static Album of the Year result, but I don't see it as a contest which might make some difference in perspective). Especially a debut might not get onto the radar until much later, and then if it is quite unique, at least for PA, it might be harder to find its way into the archives. I tend to like the derivative and innovative, the progressive and regressive, but it's those ones often that seem rather out of the what I think of as typical Prog (or Prog subgenre) boxes that can often interest me the most. I would like all months provided that they are not 12 different topics. I think putting it under one topic, or a few topics might be better actually, would work best. And I'm interested to see people's not in PA lists, so I might like to make one for the year for those not on your lists. It wouldn't work in the cool way yours does, of course. Now, sh*tsureishimasu, excuse any spelling errors, I'm off to get a sh*tsu massage from my sh*tsu inu as soon as I finish this bowl of lovely sh*take mushrooms. |

I have only listened to two and enjoy both. The second PoiL Ueda release for 2023 made my year end top 20 and the Gong album would be in a top 30 list. Ok, I've just completed a big refactoring. The tool now lists non-pa releases as well, and the selection page is much faster. The non-pa releases cannot be selected yet, that will be next. My plan is that you'll be able to compile a list that can contain both pa and non-pa releases, but you will be able to see which is which, and there will be two separate result tabs. So if you only choose pa releases, nothing will change. The nice thing about this approach is that as soon as releases get added to pa, they automatically move from the non-pa results to the pa results. All you have to do is to select one consistent list of your top releases.

Hi, While I would not like to diminish the number of folks in these lists, the one thing that bothers me is that so much of it should not quite be listed as "progressive", which is being infested by bands that are not that at all and just a bunch of songsters. That's not to say that "progressive" can not have "songs", but if we go back to the "start", it was more designed and defined by having something more than just a song, with a special meaning, of connection, to the time and place. The majority of the material being listed here is not exactly connected to anything except some sort of idealism about "progressive", which in the end is being diluted with the intent of destroying it in the future. I can see the November listing as a general part of stuff, but being a part of "progressive" is more than ridiculous in my book, and PA being far more sensitive and detailed as to its ability to include something is all of a sudden, very important to me ... as opposed to the idea of just adding things for the sake of adding things, and then invent the idea that they fit. Sorry ... just because some one has more entries, does not mean that the listing is better than PA's choices. I take it you mean the current list of releases to select from? Yes, it currently includes all releases in AP, which includes non-prog music. I will add different modes of selection there (for example, you will be able to limit it to PA releases, or also include releases tagged as prog, or which you yourself tagged as prog, if you are an AP member). The reason is simple: If we truly want to see which releases, besides from those officially listed at PA, users of this forum like best, we should enable them to add anything they want. We can sort out later whether it is prog or not.
Wrong place to discuss the age-old question of what defines "prog". Don't care, as far as these lists are concerned - the main criterion should be whether a release is listed at pa or not.
Quite a serious accusation! Well, you're being really vague. Please give an example. Who put which release in the list as "prog" which you think is not prog?
You misunderstand the purpose. We don't include non-pa releases because they are "better". We do so because among the non-pa releases there are many which will almost assuredly make it into the archives in the future. There are many of us, myself included, who would be really interested in all the new releases we listen to and enjoy.

Hi, With all due respect, I'm not one of those listeners that has to listen to everything to find out if it fits in the bathroom, or in the kitchen! I like it, when "the music comes to me" ... something which is hard to explain, but in general, the way I "meet" a lot of the stuff, new or old, is impossible to determine. Some shows up at the door ... asking for a cup of coffee. Some shows up at the door, wanting to sell you some religion! Some shows up at the door, because it was the last one on this side of the street! And then, I walked over to 711 to get some cuppa cuppa and when I got home and turned on PA on the computer, the first thing that opened my eyes was "Staraya Dereynya" and I ended up listening to it. Going back to the 70's when my listening really improved and changed, it was the "surprise" that made me like something or go looking for it. The surprises in 1972 for me, were TD, Genesis, Nektar, Amon Duul 2, Can, Byzantium, Kevin Ayers ... and from that KA album, the inner sleeve with the Hipgnosis Breakfast Ingredients for the Harvest Label ... and I went after all of those folks right away. Still love dearly Edgar Broughton Band, Roy Harper, Third Ear Band, Kevin Ayers, Capability Brown, and then later some of the European Harvest label choices, like Tanned Leather, Kayak, Triumvirat, Cherubin, Eloy, Jane and many other bands that I'm failing to remember. The only thread I used, then, was the Harvest label chase down, which was almost exactly like ECM which I was listening to at the time ... and not even Keith Jarrett either, but ECM for me started with Gismonti, then Garbarek, then Rypdal ... and the rest was history ... all of it! The album of the month, for me, is fine for everyone else, but not really something that helps with the listening style that kinda requires "different", "alluring", wow ... I need some more coffee! ... stuff that is vastly different and it hits you from a completely different side of the "idea" of how to find music ... finding music, FOR ME, is not about "being told" at all ... and a list, for me, is sort of like being told what everything is, and here is a sample for you to needle, and by the time I hear 3 or 4 of them, it's like they all sound the same. Half of your listing, in my book ... is just you looking like you care for all the bands. And hoping that in a year's time, many of those bands will be sending you free copies of their material for your enjoyment and review. I don't see that you are into it for the art at all ... you are in it for the "styles" that fit ... invented by a number of folks out there somewhere. Popularity, is not an indication of the things I should listen to ... and sometimes, generally, I turn the other way intentionally! You don't know what it is like to fight a corrupt establishment. I was in the middle of Vietnam, in the middle of the National Guard surrounding the Rathskeller in Madison, and freely frisking and touching all the women and students, and then getting my head banged in Chicago when ___ & The ___ ______ did not show up for a concert, and here came Dailey's troupes to hit you ... and a week later, one of your friends, was shot down in an apartment and accused of being a terrorist ... he was a straight A student in Madison, and so far removed from politics, it wasn't funny! You have no idea, how much of the music in the late 60's and early 70's was so important and stood up for you ... and all you can hear is music that has very little basis for its content ... and hope to get your imagination excited enough to get an erection! And listen, of course! Then you would understand what "meaning is" and "how" it can be worked. So much of the stuff listed, is simply not important enough ... other than ... just another song. I don't want PA, or "progressive" to be ... just another song! It's a different time and place. I know that ... but a list, for me, is just an exercise in meaninglessness ... which you are justifying by numbers! Sorry ... not my thing! And I'm glad that PA uses PEOPLE ... not numbers!

I find that insulting. Running my website costs me money, and it took countless hours (man-years) to build. There is no advertising, there are no promo-code links, I'm not making any money. Of course it is my website, so there will always be some amount of "self-promotion" in it no matter what I do. But to suggest that I'm only doing it to get free review copies of albums ... that's an ugly low blow.
Those numbers come from PEOPLE, in case you didn't notice. All of whom you are insulting with your hateful demeaning comments. You don't like it? Fine. THEN. STAY. AWAY. please.

When someone's head is shoved very firmly up his/her/their own narrative, there is no point in trying to reason with them, explain to them, or seek clarification. Communication becomes impossible and or infuriating. Come to expect it, but still it is such a downer and makes me enjoy my time at this forum much less. I like such lists for seeing what I don't know, discovering music, sharing what I like, and seeing what others appreciate. Thanks so much for putting this together, you've put much effort into this and into your site. And I look forward to what more is to come. And if one cares about "progressive", well, you've been innovative/ progressive with your site. |

Moshkito, if its not your thing, it's very possible for you just to ignore it and move on. Some of us actually enjoy seeing and discussing what we like listening to without insulting each other's tastes or resorting to smug self-absorbed nonsense or this ridiculous attempt at gatekeeping progressive music away from anyone that hasn't achieved divine enlightenment. What Mike is doing here, and what ProgArchives also does, very simply boils down to helping more people enjoy music that is new to them. Many that wouldn't otherwise have come across that music at all. If you don't like that, fine, ignore it and leave it to those less self-righteous.

| I find it a shame that Pedro has to go down this road every time. When he concentrates on the music (and not berating people who like good music) then he is very good indeed. I enjoy that Psicolorama release a lot and he recommended it! But he gets lost a lot of the time. I think he has very good music instincts but zero social skills to speak of but maybe that the majority of prog fans summed up in a nutshell! |

I had low expectations. I had seen very low ratings for it before listening and was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable I found it to be. Not amazing, but pleasant. Or do you mean compared to what you checked out of my other choices? Sprain and World's End Girlfriend are not such easy listening. |

I've had some technical issues with it, meaning I kept losing my lists (will try another browser) and it was automatically exporting my ranked selections from the yearly list to the monthly list. I might be able to get that to work again, and hopefully stick with another browser. Anyway... Yes, I caused that problem yesterday, but I fixed it earlier today. @Logan: yes, disappearing lists were a problem, but that should not happen anymore. I’ll also store them in the AP account when you’re logged in, then they’ll be available across browser instances. |

^^ One thing I really liked is that it was automatically exporting my selections from the overall 2023 list in ranked order to the appropriate monthly charts without me having to manually input those again. I could get that to work by posting my overall coded 2023 list at PA again and again before. Even though it is listed, I will try that again now. EDIT: No, didn't work. Having one's selections automatically export from one's "all of 2023" list to the individual months is very helpful. |

Yeah sorry, I had a bug in there that at one time might have given you the impression that it worked like that. I'll look into it - it's definitely possible to carry over votes between the monthly and yearly polls. Going forward I can see it work the opposite way - you vote for the releases of the current or previous month, and towards the end of the year you already have those votes available for the end-year yearly poll.

These polls, together with the release calendar and the queue feature could be great tools to achieve that "release awareness" collaboratively. If enough people participate, most great new releases will be added to the database (because they are on someone's list), and they will be seen by others. |

I wish that we were not temporally locked out and the futurearchive.org's wayforward machine was available for us to look into (and even time-stream) 2025 releases. I'm looking forward to The Smile's Wall of Eyes (to be released January 26) Anyway, I still have plenty for 2023 to listen to, re-listen to, and consider for my AOTY list. |

Big Big Train have an album coming out Feb or March. New vocalist (from PFM) will feature for the first time Alberto Bravin. His 'CV' in his own words My name is Alberto Bravin and I’m from Italy, from Trieste, that’s a small town on the northeast border of Italy, near Slovenia. I have played the piano since I was three years old. And then I started studying singing in the Conservatory, here in Trieste. And then I earned a diploma in modern singing in London, so I used to live in London for a couple of years, so I know the British guys and a little bit of the culture. I’m also a recording engineer, both a live and studio recording engineer. I had quite a known studio here in Trieste for a lot of years, and then I moved to Milan because I joined Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM). Before that I had a band called Synesthesia. We made two albums that were produced by Franz Di Cioccio, the drummer and the main guy in PFM, so that’s the connection. When the original guitar player of PFM, Franco Mussida, left the band they called Marco Sfogli to replace, but they also needed someone who can sing and play a little bit of guitar, little bit of keyboards, a little bit of everything, and my name came up. And they just called me and said, “well, we are of course trying several people, but do you wanna try?” I went to Milan, we rehearsed once and that was the first PFM rehearsal that they did in seven years. So I played with PFM for seven years and it was beautiful. It was great, a great experience, really rock ‘n’ roll experience. Sure! You can add any release to your list. Depending on pa/non-pa and prog status, they will end up in the proper combined chart, and in your list they will also be flagged appropriately.

I've just improved the UI a little bit. There's now two separate modes of selection: - Look up release: Perfect for when you already have a list of releases and you just need to find and add them - Browse releases: Choose this if you don't already have a fixed list of releases - or maybe even just take a look in order to see which releases you could listen to next! The list of releases now also shows the genre as well as the release date (if it is in the future). If you browse with the filter set to only show PA releases, the list will show the PA genre. Sure, if you have that many albums. It's easier for AP users who have rated their favorite releases throughout the year, then you can narrow down the list to those and you merely need to click the select buttons. But for those that haven't or have no AP account, there's no way around having to look up the releases.
