Quote I read a recent comment by Keith Emerson that he "is not a rich man". He also said he doesn't "know how Greg (Lake) manages". I thought ELP were Superstars, with massive following and record sales. Did they squander their individual wealth, or didn't they make as much as we thought they did in the first place?

Is this why members of ELP, Yes, Crimson, Rick Wakeman et al end up playing small venues? I had assumed this was because they wanted to play somewhere/anywhere, but is it because they need the money? Are they now at the same level as semi-pro musicians all over the world who have to scratch a living from bygone days?

Yes still plays huge venues. I suppose ELP wouldn't, but you'd think they'd tour and at least play medium sized ones if they needed the money. Well, except that Palmer is playing with Asia right now.

This thread makes me think about all the money I have earned in the music business.  I even wrote a song about it.  LOL

Yes still plays huge venues?  More like casinos, bars, small theaters etc.

I've seen Yes in immense settings, dating back to CTTE in 1972 (Chicago Arie Crown Theater), Relayer tour (Chicago Auditorium) and, most recently, 35th Anniversary tour (Rosemont Allstate Theater).

It won't happen, but if the originals regrouped and reprised TFTO, I'm sure they'd sell out major venues again.  Short of that, these seem like very small settings.  Very disappointing.

Clive Jackson of Doctor and The Medics was once asked what it is like being regarded as a 'one hit wonder' - his gleeful reply was "F**king marvellous". Selling 2.5 million copies of a cover version didn't earn him a a great deal of money in royalties, he made his money off the back of that one hit wonder by doing 285 live shows in that year, as he said in a recent interview: "...there is no way we could have sustained that by indulging in the drugs side of rock and roll". He currently lives in Wales and still earns a modest living by touring The Medics with a rock'n'roll nostalgia show.

A few years back Mrs Fripp augmented the Fripp family budget with a similar 80s nostalgia tour, she is currently touring a stage production of Hormonal Housewives and continues to release albums as a solo artist and with The Humans and The Weekend Guitar Trio,  I would not dare to speculate who earns the most in that household.
What?

It's funny, when I began going to prog concerts in the mid 70's, I thought everyone I saw on stage was filthy rich.  The 1st I remember hearing otherwise was in 1977 when ELP had to stop touring with the orchestra 'cause they were going broke.  I thought that was just an unusual situation though.

Recently, I watched this TV series called, 'The Evolution of Metal.'  On one of the shows they were interviewing a current day record exec and I almost fell off my chair when they flashed his name on the screen.  Derek Shulman!  I guess Gentle Giant didn't make enough for the Shulman family to retire on  Wink
