 Topic: Bands like Samla Mammas Manna

I really like the folky, twitchy semi-avant stuff like Samla. I can only think of a few bands that are similar in spirit if not really in sound. These are kind of in descending order of how similar I think they are to Samla in any way at all. Some of them are kind of long shots.
Begnagrad
Pocket Orchestra
Þursaflokkurinn
Etron Fou Leloublan
Aksak Maboul
Miriodor
Uz Jsme Doma
and obviously some Lars Hollmer solo stuff (though I still haven't heard any of it!) plus Von Zamla and Fred Frith's Gravity. Maybe Cartoon, The Muffins, stuff like that.
What else is there?

Ensemble Nimbus, also with Hasse Bruniusson. I have two albums by them: "Scapegoat" and "Garmonbozia" which sound like two parts of one album actually. Brilliant stuff, and with all my love to Samla must admit that Ensemble Nimbus are even better than them. Also you should check Cro-Magnon and Yolk.

French TV share some of SMM's sense of knockabout humour coupled with avant prog, and actually cover the Zammla Mammas Manna piece Joosan Lost/The Fate on their album The Violence of Amateurs.
You might also enjoy Birdsongs of the Mesozoic.

Oh yeah, that French TV cover is killer. That's my favorite FTV album actually. I do like Birdsongs (especially the new live one from NEARfest) too.
Need to check out Ensemble Nimbus - that's a big hole in my collection. Don't know much about the others that have been mentioned, so I've got some stuff to check out - thanks!

Looks like I've got some new bands to check out!  Yay!
Progreviews - I've just been getting into Hollmer's solo work. I
recommend XII Sibriski Cyklar and Vandelmassa from his true solo albums
and also a more distinctly RIO live release under the name of Looping
Home Orchestra which features among others Fred Frith on guitar and is
probably the most Samla-esque of his solo albums (at least of the ones
I've heard so far anyway).

...The harder the band names are to remember or to write correctly the more complex the music is? That seems to be a rule in the world of progressive music

Yes' music must be pretty simple then and the less said about If the better. One day I'm going to drink 10 pints of lager then go into a record shop and ask for something by Samla Mammas Manna, just to see what comes out.

Well, if this was a "Bands like Henry Cow" thread the names would be a lot easier for an English speaker. But since I'm asking about folky and non-Anglophone stuff, it seems to make perfect sense to me that you'll get a lot of non-English names.
Thanks everyone for the recommendations! TP, for your tastes I highly recommend Begnagrad (self-titled album recently reissued on CD by MIO Records) and Þursaflokkurinn (note that the Icelandic "Þ" is often spelled "th" in English). The latter band is sometimes compared to Gentle Giant but I don't really hear that; I think the Samla comparison is closer.
