I becoming a huge Steve Wilson fan, with Porcupine Tree becoming a favorite of mine. I am not, however, a Blackfield fan. I'd like to see Wilson break off with another project. Maybe something a bit more intense and louder than Blackfield. What band should he put together? Come with a great side project (even a name) for Wilson, what style should it be, and what musicians should back him up?

Tony mentioned a possible Rush-Wilson collaboration... not sure how much if anything, there is to it.... but THAT would really be something....

Steve Wilson will be working with Mike Portnoy and Mikael Åkerfeldt later this year - that will be a loud project.

Any idea when they were to get started?  I only heard that it was supposed to be in 2006.

I know Steve is planning on new Blackfield and PT albums and even a new Bass Communion album, all in the nxt year or so.

I'd like to see Wilson team up with Ruddess on keys, Danny Carey of Tool on drums (which I just found out that he's from around here and went to the University of Missouri of Kansas City. Small world.). Not sure about bass, but Trey Gunn keeps popping up.

Understandable. Even when Porupine Tree is rocking out, it's rarely back-breaking, unlike...Train of Thought or Ghost Reveries.

<<I think this Portnoy\Wilson\Åkerfeldt-thang will be very derivative.>>

Are they doing this as a trio, or are they still finalizing a bassist and/or keyboardist?

It would hardly be a good trio with 2 guitarists and a drummer. Wilson can be on piano/mellotron, but I'd rather see a keyboardist thrown in.

I'm pretty sure that it will just be the trio (guitar/keys/drums) but they might have a studio guy come in to lay down bass, but he won't actualy be part of the creative band
I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

Trey Gunn or Sean Malone would be a cool addition for bass.  So would a lot of others as well.

I'd rather just let Wilson sing.  Akerfelt can play guitars.  We all obviously know what Portnoy will be doing.  A bassist hrmmmm??  I don't think Pete Trewavas is doing too much lately.  I wouldn't mind Sean Malone, but I just don't think he's the right groove guy for Portnoy.

How can you like PT but not Blackfield?Confused

Out of all his numerous side projects,Blackfield comes the closest to sounding like Porcupine Tree.

Steven Wilson should team up with Jaki Liebezeit (drums), Jah Wobble (bass), William Orbit (keyboards) and Nik Turner (flute and sax). The band should be called Really, and the style should be unique, improvisational groove pieces based around simple rehearsed codas.

As for the Akerfeldt, Portnoy thing, I think that they should get Muzz Skillings to play bass, and Ian Underwood to play keyboards. Naturally enough, they'd call it WASUP.

OMG! Rush/SW joint venture? If this was possible, I'd be creaming for days.

I think I read somewhere that Rush approached SW in order to have him produce their new album (due in 2007) - but now I don't remember whether he told them he had prior commitments. Perhaps it was Tony who wrote that here on PA... My memory is failing me these days, even though we're talking about the mighty Rush!Wink
