Three years, four albums vs three years, four albums. Both periods are pretty evenly rated on here. Even though 73-76 has The Power and the Glory, one of my favorites of all time, I'll go with the early stuff.

The first albums, easily. Even though I must admit I haven't really listened to the second half of the albums, except once "The Power and the Glory" through ITunes. But that once I heard it I wasn't really impressed at all, and then I got "Playing the Fool" and for what I heard, I didn't really like any new stuff. I was convinced here to give a try to the first albums, and I really loved the first two ones... and the next two also had some nice moments, but were moving closer to the sound from "Playing the Fool" and "Power and the Glory" that I hadn't liked before, so I decided to stop just there.

I voted for the first option for the simple fact that Three Friends and Octopus came out of this period. These are my two favorite GG albums with Free Hand coming just right behind those two.

73-76 by far. I'm not a fan of Three Friends,Acquiring the Taste or Octopus. I do like their debut though.

What is it about Three Friends and Octopus you don't like? Looking at your avatar, I think Marillion are one of the most overrated prog bands in history along with pretty much any neo-prog band that followed them or came out around the same time as they did. Hogarth can't sing worth a damn and Fish is just a joke to me, but he does write some interesting lyrics --- that's about it. I used to enjoy their music but the more I listened the more I began to realize that one of the things that bothered me is the fact that both Hogarth and Fish would never shut the hell up and let the music speak. For a prog band, I expected the music to lead and not the other way around, but that wasn't the case with either version of the band. Just thought I would get that off my chest.

I have to go with the first choice, only because I don't think Interview is as classic as the other albums. I still think it's their last great record but it never clicked with me in the way that all the previous ones did

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore both these 'phases' but I am more fascinated and blown away by the first 4 albums (and 'transitional' album Glass House) than what came after. Voted for 70-72.
