I was thinking about doing something similar some time ago because of certain similarities in album names. Originally I was just going to pit Cardiacs' A Little Man and A House and the Whole World Window up against Pendragon's The Window Of Life as indicated in the topic's title, but since there still more parallelism with adding Pendragon's The World, I opted to do two chronologically sequential albums by both (and in both cases, the two albums by each band may be compared to each other). The Cardiacs' 1988 and 1999 predated the Pendragon albums by a few years (I do prefer to list albums from the same time), but it's not far off the 1991 and 1993 Pendragon albums.

If you don't know the albums, here is some music to listen to. Even if you only listen to a few minutes by both, feel free to vote if you haven't heard them. I don't think that Cardiacs is absolutely "world's" apart from various Neo-Prog (Marillion's Fish asked Cardiacs to open for them on tour -- that Cardiacs was booed and pelted with flying objects by some overzealous concert goers is by-the-by. So, hopefully this is not a really crazy Avant Prog vs Neo Prog battle (unlike, say, pitting Art Zoyd or Univers Zero up against Arena or Frost). I don't treat these polls as contests, more of a consciousness expanding exercise (okay, that may be hyperbole).

Sorry if any people hate my choice of tracks, but it's not easy (albums should be listened to in entirety and lived with to be really appreciated of course). Bring up others to make a more convincing case if you like (I'm uncomfortable linking to whole albums).

From A Little Man And A House And The Whole World Window (1988):

From On Land and in the Sea (1989):

From The World (1991):

From The Window Of Life (1993)

So, feel free to vote even if you're not very familiar with all four albums (maybe you could comment on that in your post which says something about which album duo you choose). Will be interested to read what people have to say even if this is poor idea for a poll that generates little response.

I'm getting more into The Cardiacs: I used t think "WTF" when I heard them, then change the record. Now, I appreciate their sometimes eccentric brilliance much more, though some of their stuff still doesn't click.

However, Pendragon made a series of three brilliant albums from The World to The Masquerade Overture, so they get my vote.

But what a weird pairing of bands.

Pendragon for me, but I see why the Cardiacs have a loyal following too

^ They have a very loyal following.

^^ This is a weird pairing, they do not complement each other musically. Sometimes I try to think of songs or albums, even if the bands are very different overall, that work together (sometimes because I think the contrasts work), but this started with what I thought would be a fun name for a poll, "The Whole World Window of Life". At least no one else has likely paired these four albums before. I do think that I could have chosen songs to highlight that would have worked a little better together from these albums (for those that have not heard the albums), but instead I went with very highly regarded Pendragon ones and a couple of Cardiacs ones that I just like. Musically, I think the Rush vs. Cardiacs polls worked a little better (and I like pitting songs against each other more than albums no matter how different they are as it's easier for people to familiarize themselves with both before voting). I think its neat to expose one band's fans to another band that they might not normally listen to -- in a sense it can bring people of different tastes together discussing and discovering each others music. If I ever see another Genesis vs. Yes poll, I will vomit. ;)

I'm hardly complaining, but I am surprised to see that this is such a walkover. I thought that A Little Man And A House And The Whole World Window and On Land and in the Sea were albums held in high regard (only Manuel and I voted Cardiacs).

EDIT: I wonder how different the results would be had I put Pendragon's 1988 album Kowtow up against Cardiacs' 1988 album A Little Man And A House And The Whole World Window (guess I'd do it as a song vs. song battle then so that everyone could relatively easily hear both in full before voting).
