These are my Top 5 Mike Oldfield albums:-
 
1. Music of the Spheres (2008)
2. The Songs of Distant Earth (1994)
3. Tubular Bells 2 (1992)
4. Tubular Bells 3 (1998)
5. Tubular Bells (1973)

Tubular Bells is a masterpiece. Side 1 of Ommadawn is even better, but I can hardly stand side 2.

I know exactly what you mean about the Ommadawn album. Side 2 was a big disappointment after listening to the superb Side 1. The first side of Ommadawn had a tremendous build-up leading to the grand finale but the second side just ambled along for 20 minutes without really going anywhere.

The five I like most are Tubular Bells - Hergest Ridge - Ommadawn - Incantations - Crises. Not that much between these, I love them all, but overall I will probably just about prefer Ommadawn... or Tubular Bells... no, it's Ommadawn.

I voted Song Of Distant Earth because it fits very well in the concept. Who has read the novel can verify it.
Other albums that I like very much, other than the obvious Tubular Bells, are Incantations, Platinum, Crisis (with Ian Anderson and Chappo Chapman). Also TBII is quite good. I've had problems with Ommadawn, Hergets Ridge and Amarok. It take time for me to appreciate them. In particular the last.

"Ommadawn" appears to be taking a clear lead in the poll. I guessed it would be a toss-up between either "Ommadawn" or "Tubular Bells" topping the poll. I would have been amazed if anyone had voted for "Heaven's Open" - Mike Oldfield's most disappointing album in my opinion, recorded just before his bitter departure from Virgin Records in the early 1990's.
