It's that time again! 

Chick was so hip, he could fuse his love of jazz, classical, and latin styles to brew up some truly amazing excursions. This poll will focus on his works that are either fusions of the aforementioned genres, are directly influenced by the work of certain classical composers, and/or include the usage of chamber groups/orchestras.

Some notes on the albums:

Three quartets is certainly the odd one out when it comes to sound and instrumentation. It certainly could have fit with his solo fusion output, but I decided to include it here based on Chick's direct influence from Late Romantic/Early 20th century composers for this project. Definitely a rip-roaring time.

Chick's Children's Songs have been in development since 1971, and are directly inspired by Bartók's Mikrokosmos etudes for piano, which increase in difficulty. If you listen closely, you'll notice these have popped up everywhere in his music. Some of them appear as named entries and are played with whomever else in on the album. Examples would be on Light as a Feather (no. 1), Friends (no. 5 and 15), and whole bunch with Gary Burton (like on Duet). However, keen listeners will notice that no. 3 is the intro to Space Circus on Hymn..., no. 6 is the basic theme for Song for the Pharaoh King on Where Have I..., and no. 9 is Pixieland Rag on The Leprechaun.

The rest are all with small chamber groups or chamber orchestras, and I was pleasantly surprised to find a wealth of great material here! The version of Spain here might be the definitive rendition! It's a tough choice between that album and Continents, so I might wait on a decision.

Other albums, such as Lyric Suite, the first disc of New Crystal Silence, and The Mozart Sessions would qualify for this, but the former two were already in the Gary Burton collab poll, and the latter is coming soon...

We once again roll into an area I'm not terribly familiar with, only knowing Children's Songs. Three Quartets sounds very interesting and will be the first one I get to from this set. 

Also, excellent work again. Breaking up his massive discog into separate styles really helps in the exploration. Thumbs Up

Three Quartets is one of the greatest albums he ever recorded! No matter how many times I hear it, I never grow tired of it.

It's hard to choose a favorite from Chick Corea. I voted for the Continets, but I certainly like them all.

Thanks! I wasn't sure if many were going to really care, but that means a lot. I hoped to help some people discover more of his stuff (as I am even more now). Maybe one day he'll be on PA as a solo artist.

I think I'll go with Spain and Piano Concerto #1 today.

I am doubling down on my choice. Despite the impressive Continents Concerto, the full album itself isn't as consistent. There's some great jazz tracks and Chick playing solo, but overall, that doesn't grip me as much as almost every minute of Spain/Piano Concerto #1. I think it's the Piano Concerto on the album that really does it for me actually.

Again, certainly the most different out of all of them, at least in terms of stripped down instrumentation. I had a feeling it would win out since it's probably the most fusion-oriented. But of course, having Michael Brecker and Steve Gadd give it an edge.
