Curious to know what you think. To me Haken have always been a metal band. These days (2023) they have a strong Jazz-Fusion slant (on Fauna, but was also apparent on Affinity), and of course they are quite versatile/eclectic in general. But firmly rooted in (prog) metal, as far as I am concerned.

It's of course often difficult to determine this on an artist level, but in the case of Haken I'd say that every one of their releases is more metal than rock.

More metal. The jazz-fusion slant you mention, is apparent on all their albums, imo.

Yes, but most on Fauna and Affinity.

Metal.  Absolutely loving Fauna.  My most listened to album of 2023...so much fun.

I consider metal to be a subgenre of rock. The only Haken albums I have heard in full are Visions and The Mountain, and those are both so rock and metal as genres that I can't parse the values. Hardly my expertise in music if I have any.
Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

This is the only site where I've seen them designated as a heavy prog band rather than a prog metal one. In any case, I've always seen them as prog metal, regardless of the more eccentric influences they put into their work

It's interesting - at RYM they are currently listed as "Progressive Rock, Progressive Metal" (in that order), and at my website they are listed as Prog Rock. I wonder whether the latter is due to the fact that many users who assigned the genres came from PA ...

There are many definitions of metal and how it differs from rock, but to me three things stand out:

1. The drums, specifically the bass drum (e.g. double bass, blast beats with the snare etc.)
2. The guitar tone
3. The guitar riffs

In particular, the drum work together with the approach to guitar riffs can make something unmistakeably metal.

Having said that, obviously a substantial part of Haken's music is not metal (e.g. not exhibiting these traits). But that's usually (extended) passages of tracks which all contain (essential) metal parts.

For such an eclectic band I would actually like to choose a label like "Progressive Metal/Rock/Fusion".

Hm ... "metal is rock" is a bit like saying that "birds are dinosaurs". Both statements are correct, but there's still a big difference between a seagull and a T-Rex.

Besides: Listen to the first minute of The Point of No Return (first track from Aquarius), there's your polka reference right there Smile

^^ Especially with heavy metal, I can't really draw the line between classic heavy metal and hard rock. Various albums classified as of post-metal, stoner metal, doom metal are what I might call rock. This kind of stuff is rooted in heavy metal, and that is rooted in the rock tradition (grew out of it). And more modern metal I guess grew out of metal. Like rock and roll, its roots are in the blues, but I guess metal (not classic heavy metal) moved away from the blues.

I had an interesting discussion with someone at metalarchives.com years ago explaining to why metal is not rock and why classic heavy metal is not metal.

I'd be fine with calling Haken Metal/Rock Fusion and would agree. Like many bands, certainly most of the interesting ones I'd say, it is more than just one thing.

I'm gonna harken back to the origins of the band; Haken was not crappy/djenty back in the day. Ermm

I think they were put in Heavy Prog because of the debut. That was around when they were added, no? It was too symphonic to be put in PM. If Visions was their first album, they'd probably be put in PM. I think The Mountain and Restoration are also symphonic enough for them to be put in Heavy as a middle ground, but Vector/Virus are pure PM albums. Fauna is a total mixed bag, but still pretty metal.
