For very personal reasons, I voted for Hopes, Wishes and Dreams, by Ray Thomas. I have a lot of memories listening to this album.

Although I have always considered myself to be a pretty big MB fan I don't know any of these. I have, however, heard the Blue Jays album by Hayward and Lodge which I always thought was pretty good.

Natural Avenue, by far, and not just because of the Roger Dean cover.
The Moody Blues absolutely epitomized "the whole is far greater than the sum of the component parts", because the solo albums were VERY hit-and-miss. Even the stronger efforts have a blandness about them that makes them mostly forgettable, and I say that as a die-hard fan of the band. Is "twee-ness" a word?

Natural Avenue, The Present and From Mighty Oaks all have some lovely songs on them as does Blue Jays but none of them really hit the spot like any of the classic 7 moodies lps.

I have all of these albums and for me the absolute standout is "Songwriter" with "Natural Avenue" a clear second choice and "The Present" coming in third.
All the other albums have their moments among the very patchy material. If you took the best tracks from each album you could probably come up with a top-class Moody's album. |
