Topic: Exit Walsh; Enter Elefante Posted: January 11 2007 at 13:38 |
I like both quite a bit. Audio Visions has always been a favorite of mine, though.

iTunes: "Magum Opus" from Kansas' Two For The Show (Hope's bass solo towards the beginning is playing as I type. Just great stuff!)

I love all the albums with Walsh and I can't stand anything the Elefante's touched. I think they are terrible producers, terrible performers, and terrible writers. They took one of my all time favorite prog bands and turned it into 1980's, cheese laden, pseudo Christian, radio poop. I just bought the two CD Kansas best of collection at Chrstmas and I was stunned. I had actually forgotten just how different the band became after the Elephante's took over. Compare Fight Fire With Fire to The Wall, They don't have anything in common. They come from two completely different, and I would say mutually exclusive, mind sets with regards to composition, poetic depth, target audience, performance level. The Elefante's are not and have never been prog.

Vinyl Confessions gets my vote. Audiovisions has "No One together" and "Hold On" which are good tracks, but the rest are pretty average.

Yeah? Well I'll take Windows, Crossfire and End of an Age over anything that happened over the next 4 albums with Steve Walsh. Steve Walsh stopped being a prog writer after the Masqe album.
Anyway back to topic I choose Audio Visons because of No one Together one of the best songs Kansas ever did.

I think Vinyl Confessions is more consistant ... maybe it doesn`t reach the highs of audio visions (no one together, back door, relentless , and curtain of iron) but vinyl confessions doesn`t sink into the lows of audio visions either ( got to rock on, loner, anything for you) in whole vinyl confessions is a smoother listen and more to my taste and not forgetting vinyle confessions does have on it Cross fire and windows also Chasing Shadows is probably my favourite slow song ever since Dust in the wind or Nobody`s home . Vinyl Confessions is a good (not great) album all Kansas fans should own

Nice poll !
Audio-Visions was my first encouter with Kansas and it litterally blew my mind !!! I like/love all the songs on it so it gets my vote.
But I remember listening a lot to Vynil Confessions when it was released : to be honest, I had no idea by the time that Kansas could be classified as prog rock. Apart Face It and maybe Diamonds and Pearls, the songs are good and Chasing Shadows is a great ballad from the Elefante.

John and Dino Elefante should have stayed producing and writting songs for Petra. It's not that they suck being involved with Kansas, it's just that I like them better that way. Well, thats just me. So my vote went to Audio Visions. Good album.

for me, Audiovisions has a bit more soul and variation....
VC is quite a reasonable AOR album, though the tracks feel to me to be too homogenised and limited in scope..

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson
