Topic: Split Enz appreciation thread Posted: May 29 2007 at 22:53 |
Well the last rhead had to be closed because of trolling. But this one is about SE rather than why are they in the archives. Anyway I was thinking the song History Never Repeats is a fine piece of music, but I always thought it coule have been longer like a proggy instrumental just before the last chorus, because it has this 'epic' feel to it, as if it was a ten minute song cut down to 3 minutes for the radio. Regardless I still think its great.

Sheesh, let the poor dude talk about Split Enz all he wants. It sure beats all the threads about "why does Phil Collins suck", "why did Hackett leave Genesis", "compare Mike Rutherford's and Tony Banks' nose sizes", "Dream Theater rules", "Dream Theater sucks", etc etc etc

We can start one if you like. Their noses were quite large in the Land of Confusion video.
Anyway, Split Enz rulez the ANZAC prog (-y? -ish?) scene, mofos...who else is there? Sebastian Hardie? Oh yeah, The Church, of course, but no one around here seems to like them, and if they do, they deny their progginess. Much like the Enz.

Let's keep this thread on topic please. If it stays that way, it will be fine.

Debrewguy asks - You mean Nancy & Ron ? PS. what do you think of the remake by the ? Used, Disturbed or whatever punk metal group that recently re-did it a great manner ...

Phil Judd was pretty scary back then, what with that weird vibrato and the fact that there was always some kind of eerie mellotron noise underneath his songs. Pretty cool stuff.

Okay, the reanimation of the thread has begun. I think it will turn out viable in the end.
I like Second Thoughts / Mental Notes, well, the early Enz albums. Great long compositions, very original as well. Dyzrhythmia or however you spell it, is nice as well, especially because of Charlie and Jamboree. I love the musical tension in Charlie, and how it is released in the end. I love the sound of the piano in Jamboree.
Too bad Phil Judd left the band, but it gave Neil Finn an opportunity to step forward, I think. It was a bit Tim's band.
I think the rhythm section of Split Enz was one of the best and most original in prog. I like the fact that Split Enz went for the original, inventive approach, as opposed to Crowded House, where Neil Finn was more aware of the roots of different rock styles, and worked in a more traditional way.
I'm not a big fan of the "middle" albums, like True Colours. I think that they were looking for a sound which would be right for the eighties, which they found with Waiata a.k.a Corroboree and Time And Tide especially. The later albums had their moments as well, but I think they were over their peak.
I like their live album The Living Enz as well. They didn't delete all the screaming girls out of the mix, which was nice in a way. Niny neez' up is very funny too. Great live version of Walking Through The Ruins.
Great band!

Second Thoughts gets a bit too music hall for me at times- not an improvement on Mental Notes. Dizrhythmia I love because it still has all the old arty touches, but with a new, dare I say, punky, energy.

I can understand that. I do like that sound though.

Well spoken. Arty + punky energy: that's true!

I want to start out with an early album. I noticed there are some recent remasters available. The sound must be nice on these editions?
Mental Notes or Second Edition? or Both?
Have you heard the Phil Manzanera solo albums Listen Now or K-Scope? The early Enz is featured quite prominently as the musicians and handle the vocals as well.

Mental Notes is probably a better choice for hardcore proggers- there's some 'tron on there.
Those early Manzanera albums are really good, as is Diamond Head.

Try "Spectrum" and Ariel. Mike Rudd fronted prog. http://www.mikeruddbillputt.com/CDs/CDs_page.htm#ariel
