Topic: Samla Mammas Manna Posted: August 05 2006 at 13:36 |
I've just ordered two of their albums: Maltid and Klossa Knapitatet. Can anybody tell me what they sound like?
BTW, what does the name mean?

Wondeful Swedish band - apart these two I have also their debut, and all three are great albums, although different from each other. This is one the best avant-garde bands of the 70's. Do not know what their name means, but music is extremely interesting. Enjoy! And if you like it - get some solo albums by Lars Hollmer.

Trouserpress is the man for all things Sammla. The sound is a kind of Scandinavian take on Canterbury - rock instrumentation, jazz influences and a hefty dose of Scandinavian good humour with a pinch of folk music for good measure. The later Zammla Mammaz Manna incarnation was a tad more RIO orientated and featured some dazzling improvisation - check out Schlagen's Mystik/Fur Alderye Nybegynnare (spelt wrongly but close enough).

Samla mammas manna means.. "Collect Moms Manna". Strange name. Måltid is swedish for "Meal" and "klossa knapitatet" is a word-play with the phrase "krossa kapitalet" (literally meaning something like "capital/capitalism"). Would you like some translations of song titles as well? :) Actually, i'll do that, just cause i have nothing better to do.. MÅLTID - MEAL :) Dundrets Fröjder>The Delights of the rumble Outförsedd Förlossning>unforseen delivery (as in giving birth to something) Den Återupplivade Låten>The resurrected song Folkvisa I Morse>Folk song earlier this morning Syster system>Sister system Tärningen>The Dice Minareten>The minaret Vaerelseds Tilbud>uuh.. you got me.. Minareten II> guess.. Circus Apparatha>... Probably The Probably>...
KLOSSA KNAPITATET
Ingenting>Nothing Liten dialektik>Small..someone else help me? Sucken> The sigh Långt ner i ett kannihål> Far down a rabbithole Kom lite närmare> Come a little bit closer.. Musmjölkningmaskinen> The mousemilking machine :) Influenser>Influences Klossa Knapitatet>... Ramlösa kvällar>[Something] evenings.
There, i got to make use of being swedish, for once. :)

Listen to "Långt ner i ett kaninhål" here on PA, that gives a pretty good idea of their sound.

you may not know what to think of them when you get them, but dont put them away, try them at different times and moods, all of the sudden you find the genius. Many younger listeners have a time adjusting to them they mix alot of swedish folk sound with cat and mouse chases and zaniness somewhere between Zappa and Guru Guru. Cerebral stuff indeed! Truly one of the greatest progressive rock bands of all time, and on the level with the socalled Big 5 from england. Very popular touring band in during the 70s and 80s in scandinavia and most of europe.
Lars solos are highly recommended also as mentioned above, different in style but genius none the less.

"Samla Mammas Manna" means something like "Collect Mothers Manners".
"Måltid" means "Meal"
"Klossa Knapitalet" is a funny mis-spelling of "Krossa Kapitalet", which means "Crush The Capital"

The Samla Mammas Manna name means, as Abstrakt said, "Collect Mothers Manners" or something, but according to Lars Hollmer, the name was used only because it sounded do silly, yet extremely catchy.
The music is very jazz-rock-ish at times, with lots of interesting twists and turns. Also pretty RIO-ish at times, still very accessible music. You only need a sense of humor!

Just thought of something!
"Manna" could be a fast mis-spelling of "Mannar", which means men.
So it could mean "Collect Mothers Men"

Maltid finally arrived! Unfortunately they couldn't have got Klossa Knapitatet, so the order was cancelled...
But every time I listen to Maltid it puts a smile on my face which stays there till the end of the album. Great!!!

Where do you live, by the way, Pluto? :) Too bad KK didn't make it, as i've found it pretty superior to Maltid, after repated listenings, especially when i discovered that "cirkus apparatha" wasn't really part of the album, but just a bonus track, originally from their first. Well, then you'll at least have an excuse to listen to the sample of "Långt ner i ett kaninhål" on the site, as it is definately one of their best songs. Only "Musmjölkiningsmaskinen" is better, but that's also on KK, i'm afraid..

Too bad, I think Klossa is slightly better than Måltid, actually. But Måltid is excellent too!
