Hey now!

Well, none of the 3 ever really wowed me like, say, Guthrie Govan or, yes, Petrucci, but those guys are from decades later so that isn't a fair comparison. I picked Jimmy Page, though.

I really like Petrucci's playing, but even I had to admit that I think Guthrie Govan> Petrucci in just about every aspect: technique, emotion, innovation. Guthrie is a truly rare player of the this decade, no doubt.

Edit: I guess, for many of the younger generation of guitarists like ourselves, we really look to the newer guys, like Govan, Lane etc
For me, I can get bored of guys like Clapton and Page really easily, but love listening to someone like Govan, cos not only can he play slow bluesy stuff, but he can tear it up and express a whole wider range of emotions I just don't get with Clapton or the like.

Once you know how to feel it, you can truly see how more technique allows greater expression of a wider range of emotions. It took me a few years to get to this stage, but I'm there.

After years of guitar, Shawn Lane is really the only one who makes my jaw drop. He's playing from a different universe, and his savant-like intelligence are just more icing.

There's a youtube video where _Paul Gilbert_ has to use two hand tapping to duplicate what Shawn does picking. And Shawn is more musically tasty by far. A once-in-several generations talent.
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Page for me is the master. The guy had so much breadth and depth to his playing. I'd say his leads were his least phenomenal talent, and he had some great ones. I can think of no one who has used the pallette of the guitar in the same way. (Hendrix, Zappa)

Clapton is who he is. Great talent, but when I think of the moments of his that inspire me, they just don't match Page.

Hendrix and Shawn Lane deserve mention in any list of the best guitarists in the rock era.

Best guitarist/musician mentioned in this thread so far IMOClap A monster pianist too.
Off topic, but just had to say it.

'Song arrangement' more likely considering the numbers of tunes and riffs borrowed from elsewhere - for instance you're recpmmended look to Willie Dixon and Bert Jansch songbooks.

I have to give my vote to Page, but I might change my attitude when I hear more Beck.

For me, Beck.
Just the more expressive and most innovative player out of the 3 IMO.
He really knew how to use the tremolo arm so well!Smile
