Topic: The Northettes Posted: November 06 2005 at 13:23 |
I really LOVE the vocals by The Northettes - you know, the ladies trio: Barbara Gaskin, Amanda Parsons, Ann Rosenthal. They sing with Hatfield And The North, but you can hear some of the ladies also sing on other Canterbury (style) albums.
I think those airy voices are fantastic! Who else?

I think their contributions to the first National Health album were even better.
In the 80s Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin had several minor hits with cover versions of 60s songs - they even appeared on Top of the Pops doing It's My Party and I'll Cry If I want To.

I thoroughly enjoy their voices. Amanda Parson's voice on Tenemos Roads is incredble

Yeah the Chorales on that first Hatfield & the North album are
just otherwordly. It goes so well with that jazz/rock/classical
fusion because it's a total contrast to that usually very macho
world. I also really like the Richard Sinclaire vocals on the two
Hatfield albums, very whimsical and funny, but the gorgeous
woman vocals just sends it into the stratosphere. If somebody
has a photo of them, please put it online!

Actually I loved Barbara Gaskin's voice in her first group Spirogyra that made three prog folk albums in the early 70's
I am a little less fond of the Northettes! I even find their vocals a slight flaw on Hatfield's albums.

I liked "It's My Party", way before I discovered bands like Hatfield and National Health. I do agree about the 1st National Health album. It was only Amanda Parsons on that album, wasn't it?
As some people said, some pics would be nice, yes! I'm glad that at least the 1st Hatfield album has a picture of them.
Personally, I think their vocals belong to the absolute highlights on the 1st Hatfield album.

i love the northettes, escpecially (maybe because of her later work
with national) amanda parsons. the vocalwork on the first hatfield
album is ingenious, the way the vocal lines interweave and stuff, ive
never heard anything like it before, on 'lobster in cleavage probe' one
of them sings "
So don't be scared of a lobster or molluscs" and the other one says "I
for one am fond of molluscs", and they both hit the word molluscs at
the same time, where else have you heard something like that? also, on
"Mumps" their "la la's" are gorgeous.
as for pictures, ive never been able to find any online. but in the
national health 'complete' album, theres a funny picture in there with
amanda parsons looking down at bill bruford like shes got the hots for
him or something.
