Topic: System of a Down Posted: December 07 2005 at 10:14 |
A lot of times I read things about SOAD in this site, there's people that says they are prog (กกก). I listened to their first album (System of a down) and the second (Toxicity); and I don't see many difference between them and some nu-metalcrap bands.
The question is: what have SOAD that make them different? and: Which album reflects his "progish" style?
(Please, it's not necessary to answer that people who thinks their first two albums have something prog, it's obvious that there's nothing (or almost nothing) prog in them).

SoaD are not prog. They use complex signatures and ethnic elements, but that does not make it any more (or less) prog.

I see them as a non-prog band trying to be pathetic PROG wannabies band.
Sorry SOAD are not my cup of tea.

That's not fair - I'm sure that they have no ambitions whatoever to be recognized as a prog band. It's just some of their fans who are desperately trying to see them that way.

I quite like some of their stuff (and own 2 albums) but there is absolutely nothing I've heard by them which can be classed as "progressive" in the traditional sense of the word.
Like Metallica, they are dark and mysterious in places but definitely not progressive.

Well, in the case of Metallica I think they are prog-related or proto-progmetal (only in the 80's, of course).

My 18 year-old skateboarding nephew likes them together with Sum41 and Marilyn Manson. I think he'd cringe if he heard they were prog.

I own 3 of their disks, can't say I like them all but that's another issue. I have never listened to them and thought...ya know what that's a prog metal group right there.
Toxicity, Mesmerize & Hypnotize are the 3 I own. I like Mesmerize, Toxicity is ok but I havent cared much for Hypnotize so far.
Metal sure. Prog uh no, not to me.

you also get my vote
I think that they are the best of this 'nu' metal, as they use their imagination.
they don't just try to play a tune and finish. I would say INTELLIGENT NU METAL.
hmm.. I like that. Definitely not prog although they have some technical elements.
Serj Tankian has a great voice.

Best band in the world atm. Not a band for the Archives tho. And surely not nu-metal. What an idiotic comment.

System of a Down is full of creativity. The Mezmerize/Hypnotize project is great. I don't like the earlier material so much, it's not as enjoyable, nor does it reach the heights of this year's work. I can't help but love what they're doing now.
They may not be prog, but they are surely unique.

I'd consider them non-synth neo-prog. They could almost fit into
the Prog Metal category as well. I think these guys are bizarre,
but very creative.
I know of a local band that was heavily influenced by them and this
local band recently switched to jazz fusion but cite SOAD as a major
influencer in their original style. And these are high
schoolers. Kudos for them not playing Emo.

Neo-Prog? Name just ONE Neo-Prog band that is even remotely similar to SoaD ... I bet you won't find any.

Yea I believe Neo-Prog is just new bands using the sound of "old" prog
greats like Yes, Genesis and such. This is not to discredit them, I
enjoy plenty of Neo like IQ and Galleon, but instead I am trying to
redirect that classification for System of a Down. :)
