Porcupine Tree
Although, DSOTM speaks to me more than any album of either band. Edited by condor - September 05 2017 at 12:37 |

I haven't explored Porcupine Tree nearly so much, but I still voted for Pink Floyd. I love the lyrics on various albums, but it's the ones on Animals that I tend to recall the most (especially from "Dogs"). Pink Floyd's lyrics often appeal to my cynical view of the world.

I went with Floyd, but I had to think about it for a minute. Porcupine Tree is a little hit or miss for me . The stuff I like, I like a lot, but some other stuff, not so much. I think Floyd is a little more consistent ( at least for me) so they got my vote.

No PF, no SW. The fact that Steven did the song "Time Flies" shows he knew where he got the butter for his bread from.

That's a bit harsh. I can't remember Roger Waters writing lyrics about serial killers.

SW does seem to have a corner on that market. Blackest Eyes is so incredible. "A mother sings a lullaby to a child Sometime in the future the boy goes wild And all his nerves are feeling some kind of energy A walk in the woods and I will try Something under the trees that made you cry It's so erotic when your make up runs" |

Pink Floyd. The other band is imaginary.

PF was completely overplayed among my circle of friends. Especially DSotM. Every f'n weekend....twice! Will not likely listen to them on purpose for the rest of my days.
Re: PT. I respect much of the engineering work Steve Wilson has done over the past few years. But neither PT or his solo work has connected with me in any way. I saw PT live and they really came off as AOR compared to the other acts at the festival. So...neither.

I listen to each for the music. Lyrically neither do a whole lot for me.

I think any answer other than Pink Floyd here is baffling. The maturity and grasp of the lyrics is simply so far ahead and if you want to indulge in a bit of grown-man-spewing-strangely-teen-angst nonsense like Porcupine Tree, The Wall is clearly a better version of it. And you have Barrett, who is very much the thinking man's Jim Morrison. "And the sea isn't green and I love the queen and what exactly is a dream? and what exactly is a joke?"
I don't mind PT's earlier lyrics, though FoaBP is just embarrassing, but I don't think they hold up here. |

Pink Floyd of course. PT's lyrics are good, but I prefer Floyd's approach to writing theirs.
