There are lots of polls regarding the best this and the best that, but
maybe we can take a look at the other end of the spectrum. What's your
least favorite prog album(s) and/or least favorite prog band(s).

I don't know about all of you, but I just never got VDGG or Zappa. And I've
tried ... oh, I've tried. But to absolutely no avail.

Styx.  Do I really have to say why?

These two are among my most favorite.

Though I need to say, both them are rather specific and not so easy to get in

Less favorite? Hmm... Cannot say.

The less band/album Progressive, the less I would like it maybe?

OK, OK, I was really disappointed when I've bought Genesis's CALLING ALL STATIONS

It's not Genesis!

Zappa is definitely worth getting into.  Sadly, I don't have any VDGG. oh yeah,by the way, Zappa's birthday is on the twelfth, I encourage the Zappa fans to only listen to Zappa music on that day

Least appreciated prog bands in my collection? Ambrosia (Somewhere I've Never Travelled) and Crack The Sky's Best Of ...

Most disappointing album from a true giant of prog ... Yes Open Your Eyes ... although given the Hackett meets Howe wet dream potential, GTR is probably even worse ...

Least favoured prog-sub-genre ... Prog-metal ... I've only recently realised the problem isn't Dream Theatre or Tool ... it's prog metal ... I've yet to hear a prog metal band I enjoy as much as I enjoy Iron Maiden ...

"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

I've just got to remember another "Progresive" band of really poor amount of Progress: Enchant.

People, be careful with this band!

Aw man...I just love Styx.  Sure, if I heard them for the first time NOW, I'd think they were lame, but I heard them for the first time when I was in elementary school and they were with me thoughout high school, and I still have a soft spot for them.  They're probably my second-favorite group.

These aren't least favorites, but here are some major, major, major disappointments:  Rush's Counterparts, Yes's Big Generator, Kansas's Power.

Least favorite bands?  James LaBrie solo is definitely up there.

ELP is my most disliked, Carl Palmer excluded. They are grossly overrated. Always over-the-top, and self important, EVEN FOR PROGGERS. Their 'landmark' and 'revolutionary' prog work of 1973 has not stood up well over time. Listen to their work now and prepared to be completely underwhelmed. All style, no substance. Too many covers and 'arrangements' of other people's works, way too much 'noodling' on the keys by Emerson (the Steve Vai of Keyboards). Karn Evil my a$$. A great indication of how being faster, does not always translate into being better. Give me Banks, Wright or Eddy Harsch any day.

"Someone get me a ladder." Such a touching lyric...

OK, maybe Benny the Bouncer is their saving grace...
Marmalade...I like marmalade.

I never disliked ELB, though never thought they are from the Champion's League of Progressive with Yes-King Crimson-Jethro Tull-VDGG-Genesis-Pink Floyd.

Really very overrated band, IMO.

Styx - 20th Century Masters--The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Styx CD album cover

and any other of those millenium collection albums.  I like about 10 Styx songs a lot, 3 of those songs I like are on that album the rest was the worst of Styx not the best of

I'm...  really not sure.  I've heard some prog that didn't catch my eye (ear?), but I usually just traded it back in or something, never really dwelled on it or thought about it.  I guess I could just go with Enchant, it seems no matter how many different albums by them I try, I can never find one that seems like more than a conscious attempt to write in odd time without having good riffs.

Genesis. But I've said so before - I just can't get into them.

Oh, and I'm with Trotsky on not really digging Prog Metal. PoS excluded, obviously.

I cannot get into the following:

Jethro Tull (cringe music extraordinaire, hey nonny-nonny-aw forget it!)

VDGG (uggghhh)

Paatos (see JT)

Zappa (not my cup o' char)

Anglagard (ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ)

Echolyn (see zappa)

Magma (see Vdgg)

The mars Volta (music for people who cant see further than the end of their nose)Dead

Dream Theater ("music" for people with virility problems)DeadDead

Radiohead (prog only if you want to appear intelligent, sensitive and hip)DeadDeadDead

Fantomas ( the sound of barrels being scraped is preferable and more musical)Embarrassed

by the way, I own enough albums by this lot to actually form an opinion!

We are speaking about prog bands , here. Not radio-friendly FM rock!

Among the big groups : I would point out Tales Topographic Oceans , A passion Play, Brain Salad Surgery are all over-rated but not downright bad. I think that that later ELP works are much Wor(k)se. Love Bitch of course ranks with the best of the hatable.  Tull made Under Wraps but is it Prog? And Yes's 96 Close Your Ears is also tops as is Invisible touch but again is it prog?

Love Bitch? Close Your Ears???? Ha-ha-ha-ha!  You've made me laughing, really!!!!

Maybe it's worth to arrange a Championship for the most hillarious parody on Prog albums?

Big Degenerator, Dark Side Of The Spoon, In The Hole Of The Brown King, The Ass Lies Down At Westminster Bridge, Thin As Jeff Lynne...
