I was thinking about any bands whose final album prior to split up, is widely regarded as their best album ever. I realise that this is very subjective, and one person's opinion of a band's best album might well differ significanly from another person's.

Let's see if we can come up with a decent sized list of bands / albums that might fulfil this criterion. If I might make the first suggestion:

Il Passo Del Soldato - Nuova Era (1995) Rated 4.40

One of my very favourite RPI albums, and certainly rated very highly on ProgArchives, and comfortably the highest rated album from the band.

Any other suggestions?

That's a really good example, and if I am honest, i am struggling like hell to find another prog example in the context you are talking about.

Therefore, and I'm sorry, the only one I can think about at the moment is a non prog example, that being Bridge Over troubled Water by the great S & G.

I'll have to put my extreme thinking cap on for a prog example.Confused

Well you picked one of my favourite albums as your example.I'd have to think about it and do some searching. Hey i saw a thread on the Progears site that said NUOVA ERA is working on a new album but not all the band members are original. The guys were having trouble figuring out details because it was written in Italian if i'm not mistaken.ALPHATAURUS is also going to put out an album i've heard with a new singer who is very good.

Isis' "Wavering Radiant" for those familiar with Post-Metal.

There are quite a lot of examples in the metal genres.

ATHEIST - ELEMENTS (one of the best albums I have ever listened in my life!), Pestilence - Spheres; Ved Buens Ende - Written in Waters; Cynic - Traced in Air (imo); Maudlin of the Well (original) - Leaving Your Body Map; Diabolical Masquerade - Death's Design; Watchtower - Control and Resistance; Mekong Delta - Visions Fugitives (before the hiatus) / Wanderer on the Edge of Time (after the hiatus).

There must be others, but I can only remember the extreme bands because that's where I've been goung lately, so there you go.

Il Passo Del Soldato - Nuova Era [4.40]
Wavering Radiant - Isis [4.04]

Isis maybe not as clear cut in terms of ProgArchives overall, as a couple of their other albums very close to Wavering Radiant in terms of ratings.

Does this count, as it seems Atheist have a 2010 album out?

the band broke up for 16 years and the only original member now is the vocalist / guitarrist, but he can't play the guitar anymore due to tendinitis, so yes, elements is the last propper Atheist release. Jupiter has the same name, but isnt the same band. it is good nevertheless.

BTW, added other bands @ my OP.

A case can be made that the last Fish-era Marillion, "Clutching at Straws", was their best

Not a prog band for most of their career, but Oingo Boingo's final album was by far their best.  Danny Elfman used a lot of his orchestral film scoring knowledge to make that album their most interesting, and easily fitting into the crossover prog genre.
Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

Agreed, it's not that clear in their case because their reputation was built on the previous albums, Wavering Radiant is from 2009 and it needs time to sink in and to find its listeners. For the moment it's their best... in my opinion. Tongue

King Crimson broke up prior to the release of Red and at the time it seemed they would never play together again.

Not sure I agree with that - often times they are meaningful and lead to helpful recommendations. Thumbs Up

BUT sometimes it leads to annoying trolls, and foolish people who keep feeding them. Tongue Thus, my post indicated that the discussion itself isn't bad on principle, but let's keep it civil. Smile

Yeah, and Red is a serious contender for their best album. Thumbs Up

OK, apart from the Marillion's official thread & recommendation threads, they should be insta-ban.
