"A Timeless Classic" .

I couldn't figure out how to justify voting for Echoes, so I'll borrow your idea: "Going Strong & Sounding Fresh for 43 Years and Counting"

Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.

ECHOES. You can't find any "Equal" stuffs. "Equal" things never exist specially in Art.

I gotta say that both are the equivalent of joy for me.....
Add to that Atom Heart Mother and we have a triptych of fantastic Prog-Floyd that rivals the best of any sub-genre.....

Both fantastic pieces. Echoes is an instrumental with vocals illustrating what the music portrays, Shine On has that sense of space and eternity that fits in with the remember Syd idea. Oddly perhaps,I prefer to think of the lyrics in a more abstract way, more general perhaps. I, er, did not know Syd. Few did. But they both have that monumental epic quality. And DG guitar.

I almost forgot Echoes had vocals on it but yes between all even sounded like the phantom of the opera except not related to the fab lead guitar breaks yay!

Just finished listening to Meddle and WYWH in entirety back to back. As always after finishing m thinking-which one is better.
During this particular listen i enjoyed 'SOYCD' a lot..maybe coz i played it today almost after an year..
For 'Echoes' i hav always felt it to be essential Pink Floyd and essential space rock..and i still play it at least once a week. Echoes

addictedtoprog, my vote goes to Echoes, I love that spacy submarine radar plink plink sound going into the deep dark emptiness.
Funny thing about this track is that the band were at first not much impressed by it infact they named it at first'Nothing, Parts 1-24.' After later edits, the song was called 'Return of the Son of Nothing' before it received its final title.
I simply adore this song, every listen is aaahhh wow
hugs

This is precisely what i hav come to the progarchives for.

Echoes is the essence of Pink Floyd.
Curiosity killed a cat, Schroedinger only half.

Hi Luna, I do love Shine on you crazy diamond too to be honest but Echoes is my absolute choice no doubt, however to name another Floyd favorite to compare with Shine on it would be comfortably numb, shine on does not surpass Comfortable, that Gilmour solo kills me hugs

Shine on is a bunch of boring blues jams when compared to Echoes

I think the middle section of Echoes is pretty unnecessary. The parts around it are great, but it could easily be 5 minutes shorter.
Shine On is just dripping with emotion all of the way through. The sense of loss, mourning, and emptiness is fantastic. I think the first half is nearly perfect, and while the second half isn't nearly as good as the first, the final section is one of the best sections of music they ever made. The two parts combined are far better than Echoes in just about every way.

Of course it couldn't. The whole concept is about being underwater and that section is pivotal and, even though I generally don't like sound effects, that one works.

For the underground part..
Not just works...its out-worldly great.

In the beginning I didn't like that middle section either... I didn't particularly dislike it, but found it unessesary too. However, the rest of the song is so great that I always heard it complete anyway, and with time I have come to apreciate even that middle part and wouldn't have that song any other way. Besides, the comeback of the melody is such a high peak of the song, and without that atmospheric section and slow build up towards melody it wouldn't be nearly such a great moment. I had a very similar experience with Atom Heart Mother too. Now, I'm wondering if I really gave it a try, if something of the sort could happen with Tarkus, which has some really wonderful moments, but the middle section just ruins it for me (of course, the difference is that with Tarkus I do dislike the middle "Mass" section... a lot).
