There have been so many re-issues of it, but even if it's the best, its still going to be thought of by some as just another re-issue and money grab. If life as we know it still exists, perhaps the 75th and 100th anniversary one will beat it, but then maybe humanity will experience music in a very different way then (through ports in our heads, but those might well be mostly used for porn). ;)

Chopper seemed interested to me. I was looking at a dedicated Beatles forum, and even there not everyone was interested. Perhaps if the reviews come in, and the music historians have chimed in on the historical significance of this re-issue on BBC radio and in the Sunday Times and the like, more will get interested. I have no idea what re-issues are considered most important, or will be remembered as most important decades down the road. I do have more of an idea when t comes to the original releases (albums like Coltranes a Love Supreme and Giant Steps, Charles Mingus' The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited, the Beatles' Abbey Road, Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, The Velvet Underground & Nico, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Donovan's Sunshine Superman, Simon & Garfunkel's Sounds of Silence, Leonard Cohen's Songs of Leonard Cohen, The Shagg's Philosophy of the World etc. various of which could make such a list).

This might make for an interesting topic, what have been considered the most important re-issues in music history and/or what do individuals find most important? The ones that have been most important to me have been rarities -- albums that had very limited releases at first, but then were re-discovered often thanks to interest generated by the internet, which led to companies re-releasing them. If the "bonus" material is of high standard and were unreleased, then I might be interested in acquiring that.

I'm still hoping for a re-issue of an album from the 60s that I lost to a flood. I could buy the original used, but couldn't afford it at this time.

Anyway, perhaps future historians will judge the significance of this re-release very kindly, and the release date of this re-release will be remembered as a very significant moment in the history of music, but I think I'm being hyperbolic (they've been coming out with similar products already, I think). I doubt that a great many of the non-super fans, and those without much disposable income, will be purchasing this and drooling over it. But who knows?

I expect that it will sell quite well and the label won't be complaining "You Never Give Me Your Money".

Now it The Rutles release a 50th anniversary box-set, that I probably would purchase. I'll be forever grateful to the Beatles for inspiring the Rutles (as well as many others).

Your telling me. One of the most important reissues in music history and no one here is interested.Cry

That’s positive!

On a more serious note: I really dig this album but am with most of the guys here. I could never understand why anyone would buy an album they already own...unless it contains new material or a live gig....or maybe if one is switching from vinyls to cds or vice versa.

Sure if the original album was mastered poorly, I’d be all over it, but the original Abbey Road sounds just lovely to these ears.

The original does sound great, but I have heard the new mix of Something, and it is stunning. Also those interested in alternate takes (new material) that have never been heard before will I am sure be all over this.

Not at all, you can still purchase the original rerelease. This has been remasterd to the very highest standards and includes never heard before material. To a Beatles fan it's a no brainer.

Just a sampler

Fan is short for 'fanatic'...I like The Beatles but I'm not a fanatic. I do own all the original albums and cd's...but...... again these things get released imho because the record co's need an excuse to 'fleece' fans.
That's just my 2 cents.

How are they fleecing by releasing never heard before material and a new master, when the originals are still available, you have me confused, you either purchase this version or you do not simple really..............or do you not understand that for some strange reason?

Oh...well I din't know it was completely 'new material'...that of course makes a difference. So what are the new songs we have never heard before...just curious?
Ermm

They are not new songs as you already know but alternate takes and outtakes that sound fantastic. The Album it's self has been remasterd/remixed to the very highest standards. You say your a fan not a fanatic, well most fans I know can't wait for this release!
Just curious, why post how much you will not be purchasing this release on a thread dedicated to it? You still have the original as you say so why bother or is it you just like to argue the toss?

One more question how are fans being fleeced?

"Abbey Road" is in my opinion the weakest release of the Beatles in their "serious" phase (meaning "Rubber Soul" and anything that followed). I never liked that album much. the two best tracks are the George Harrison contributions (and those I really love)

^ The only time I buy those (super) deluxe editions is when they contain a good quality live concert (crime of the century, who's next or songs from the wood for instance). Alternative takes, some unreleased bonus tracks and a new mix is not an enough good reason for a rebuy afaic.

Seriously, even if it's the diminutive of the word, no one thinks 'fanatic' (excessive and single-minded zeal) when they read 'fan'.

I'm a music fan, I love music.
I'm an ice-hockey fan, I love the game.
I'm a Pawn Hearts fan, I love how Hammill is squealing and wailing on that record.

I'm a Beatles fan but I surely won't buy another version of Abbey Road.

For what reason?

No doubt it will, it hasn't done bad for the last 50 years compared to most modern music which has a lifespan of a few days/weeks if that.
