Where's Kansas in all this? Sales wise they out sold VDGG, Camel and GG combined. And throw in Genesis who are now enjoying a revival, during their hey day you rarely heard of them. Sorry but true!

Yes, they are the BIG six, in terms of popularity, record sales etc..

Gentle Giant, Camel, VDGG etc are second division in terms of their popularity. Three of the above BIG bands would be in my personal top 5. VDGG and Renaissance would make up MY five!

I think that the concept is related to "popular; most probable to be recognized / known by the common average standard one size mass produced person". As for innovation, creation, influence... well, we could talk about that forever... I'll say it just once "THE RESIDENTS!!!" "BRUCE HAACK!!!" "SILVER APPLES!!!"

Nearly - greatness is something that transcends its own sphere of activity, eg how much of the world has heard of Gentle Giant, Camel or Mars Volta etc? However good WE believe them to be, they have no voice in the big wide world. A large percentage of people on the planet is familiar with the names Yes/Genesis/Pink Floyd/ELP. King Crimson's reputation will probably grow stronger in the future as more of the outside world appreciates their place in all this.

Dream Theater: They would qualify as new boys in terms of volumes of sales, but again, they don't like the prog label. (Petrucci visited a Sound Control store last year and, when asked if he thought their success meant prog was back, he said "we're metal, not prog".) NO

So I'm up s**t creek since 7 qualify. So it's a big 7:

Genesis
Yes
Pink Floyd
Jethro Tull
King Crimson
Camel
ELP

Rush would qualify if they themselves were happy with the prog label, as would Dream Theater.

Gentle Giant are amongst my favourites and would boot out Crimson in my own list. VDGG don't come close on any criterion.
