It is a concept album. 100% positive.

Would it? Why? Maybe you are right, but I've never really heard it called both.

Surely a rock opera would have to be a concept album.

Terrible list-no Lamb Lies Down, A Passion Play, Tales from Topographic Oceans, etc.
As mentioned too-Green Day, really?? Another example of useless lists!

Not entirely sure what proto-conceptual means, however Pepper was intended to be a concept album (i.e. a continuous performance by the alter ego band) but they got bored with it after the first 2 songs (which are interlinked) and abandoned the idea. Despite the reprise of the title track before A Day In The Life, there is no concept connecting the songs together. |

Maybe it is. I've always heard it described as a Rock Opera though.

I'm interested in your explanation of why you don't consider Tommy a concept album/

Yeah, I guess I was too quick with the "crappy" label! It's hard to argue with this one, but there are a ton of other guitarists who deserve consideration.... Justin Hayward of the Moodies is rarely mentioned in these things, but he was an excellent guitarist with fine tone coming from his ES-335. I also take exception to Eric Lifeson being included, he's decent but not the equal of the others on this list. Where's John McLaughlin, if they want Gibson players? He smokes damn near everybody (except Fripp)! |

Other than Lake being there, that's not a bad list (and Howe is the only one to get a video instead of a picture ![]() |

I'm pretty certain it is Nick Mason who did. Just wanted to start a rumor.
Actually, it's about 38 minutes long. Edited by Slartibartfast - January 05 2011 at 22:08 |

Hmmmm....I don't think either David Gilmour nor Roger Waters ever played a Gibson product! Gilmour seemed to be a dedicated Stratocaster guy, & Waters either did Rickenbacker or Fender basses. It's still a crappy list! Gibson comes up with those from time to time, here's another: Oh my, David Gilmour with a Gibson Les Paul??!! Also, Greg Lake as one of the 10 greatest prog guitarists? |

In that case it means I have completely different reasons to dislike it: 1) it doesn't make clear what's the criteria of judgement. Is it how achieved is the concept? In that case, there are other more achieved concept albums that should be on top, like The Wall. Or is it how good are the albums? In that case, putting DSOTM and Sgt. Pepper so low is ridiculous. 2) the selections does not make any sense overall. It looks like albums from different worlds, representing the tastes of more very different people who each chose two or three albums without consulting with each other. I like my lists to have a concept of their own, some unifying intentions or whatever. |
