hmmm.... a big fan of Rush. Good for you... Rush are Gods you know. Forget those who recommended Red... it's a good album...but you need to hear the first, In the Court of Crimson King, where the whole damn thing really started, and start from there. If you want soft crimson try the debut "In the court of the crimson king" if you want heavy almost metal crimson try "Red" If you want extra chalanging crimson both soft and heavy try "Larks toungs in aspic" and then after thos 3 essential crimson albums you shuld get "In the wake of poisedon" many on this sait say its a bad copy of the debut i dont agree its a great album in its own right. Then probobly the wierdest but very good early crimson album "Lizard" and the very soft and sweet "Island" After thos the very good new waveish 80s album "Discipline" one thing you shuld know that many of the early crimson album have difrent line ups and dont sound very much the same so you might think its a total difrent band and in most cases its almost are. Thats all album i can recomend since thos are all i got so far and in what order i think you shuld buy em. My next crimson album im planing to buy are "starless and biblbe black" and Absent "Lovers: Live in Montreal 1984". Good luck to you and hope you like KC.

Can't tell you a great connection between KC and Rush, but, normally, you should start with the 1972-1974 grand trilogy, or you should be even more daring and try some modern Crimson, from the style of THRaK and ConstruKction Of Light to some full improvisations like Space Groove. |

^ that's a great Crimson recommendation a Rush fan might enjoy.. I would also say KC's 'Power to Believe' might appeal to you if you like some strangeness in your heavier prog...

^ I would suggest you start with Red. It's what I started with...and I think it is a whole lot easier to get into than the debut album.

Most of my favorite prog bands and solo aritst like VdGG, King crimson, Gentle Giant, Peter Hammill, Mike Oldfield, Rush The Mars Volta and Uriah heep are in art rock.. so i gues im a art rocker

Here are two bands that were just added in Art Rock THE THIRD ENDING http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=3104 CAPHARNAUM  http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=3105 The Third Ending has a big success with its debut album, signed for the pretentious Prog Rock Records. Sometimes, the reviews are so good, they say this is the best Australian band ever. More paced down, it can be said that this is a good modern prog band, with lots of the normal influences, the alternative breakdown or the high instrumental-wave. Capharnaum are a bit more pretentious and recommended, Assaf already made a fine review for it. Basically a heavy instrumental band, that "heavy" can mean from eclectic alternative to metal chunks of guitar sound. Good, attractive and experimental sound. But perhaps, in all the good quality of it, Capharnaum also shares some edgey movements of hard impression and math simplicity. |

Spend my morning reviewing Discordia's promising debut (http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=130499).
The band is still in search of a record label, yet they've already made the big step of a grand album and an incisive art (which they call "polyrock" and is interesting, once you hear some vocal effects or a general moody play hyper-instrumentality). Discordia doesn't fit much of the modern progressive rock desires and they would still use a bit more art in their music, but some of that is just what it takes for them to be more appealing than the tendency or, who knows, the high progressive dream. |

A first post about Ten Jinn. This seems a world acclaimed modern prog band, but it sure isn't like that in its debut, which strikes a soft, simple (or weird to like) AOR, harmonized and atmospheric rock/pop sound.

Ben: I think we can have a more slow-downed rhythm of presenting these bands, since all deserve their own great appreciation.
All you mentioned are impression. I personally listened to Disen Gage's great album and have only good words for it. So I have for Aquarium, just started to listen to its albums, got them almost all. It's practically an underground band with political and artistic emphasis, much under the influence and the quirk of songwriting Boris G., and much defying for its theatrical, conceptual, new-wave or bright dandy music, something you can hardly imagine in the neo-revolutionized 80s. Prog Jester and Miracle do indeed a nice work presenting these albums, I started myself reviewing the first in order, and I spotted some by Ben as well. I can't seem to get in touch with the new Gourishnakar, I want it madly.  |

There are a few Russian bands that I think should get more attention then they have as of late.
The Gourishankar, Disen Gage, and Aquarium. These are 3 great bands that I would recommend to just about anyone. Disen Gage's first album (The Screw-Loose Entertainment) can be downloaded legally from their website and is heavy music that is King Crimson inspired. The album is an instrumental album. The Gourishankar is a recent band from Russia that released the first album this year called 2nd Hands. Aquarium is a hard to describe because each album sounds different. For reviews of these albums I suggest you check Prog-jester's reviews or The Miracle's reviews. These have all been discussed in Prog-jester's Russian Prog Thread. Such a huge and diverse genre, hardly know where to start-- in addition to the excellent Yang and their precursor Philharmonie, I also love the great Japanese group Interpose+, American symphos Happy the Man, the raunchy blooz of High Tide, and newer additions The Gourishankar, retro progger Dominik Mueller, and Gosta Berlings Saga.
