I mean hes good, Foxtrot's first few songs are great - same with Selling England, but not enough to complete with Geddy, Squire, etc.
Some people might prefer him to the others you mentioned in the same way they prefer Banks to Emerson or Wakeman; he wasn't flashy, but he was an excellent player and complemented the music very well. I don't know that he would be in my top 5, but when I hear Get 'Em Out By Friday I can't help but be amazed that he's basically playing counterpoint, which is something you hardly ever hear a bass player do (or anyone in rock music, for that matter).
Agreed - what an AMAZING bass-line - even Watcher Of The Skies, especially towards the end. He is up there for sure. What happened to him in the 80's ?? .... Same goes for Greg Lake - some amazing bass from him early on.........his playing on the Tarkus suite is quite superb. Same goes for John Wetton. They obviously have the skill, but opt to 'serve the song' instead (which isn't a bad thing, of course) but a little, just a little self indulgence every now and then can be a good thing too. Squire and Lee never fizzled out.............and Myung - well, as many have stated, you just can hear him well enough. That's my 'beef' with DT, I just can't stand the mix. Give me Liquid Tension Experiment any day (at least you can hear Levin basses.....).

Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond from Jethro Tull rarely, if ever, is mentioned in these forums! I saw him with TAAB and Minstrel tours, his skills and performance energy are nearly unmatched!
