Peter Gabriel on Robert Fripps's Exposure. This recording of "Here Comes the Flood" is the best, superior to Gabriel's own recording of it.

I don't think these were mentioned yet...

Mark Bolan in ELO's On the Third Day album.
Roy Harper on Pink Floyd's Have a Cigar.

Once you leave the 1970s, guest performers are rather more prevalent, particularly on avant prog albums, and later with projects like Ayreon. Some guests in recent years appear on several albums each year, like Steve Hackett and Marco Minnemann as good examples.

Peter Hammill's appearance on Robert Fripp's "Exposure". His performance in "Disengage", "Chicago" and "I May Not Have Had Enough of Me but I've Had Enough of You" are the high points of the album for me.

Another favorite of mine!!  He also did amazing solos on "Another Green World," "Before & After Science" etc.

Fripp's solo on Bowie's "Heroes" is another classic!  I saw the David Bowie Tribute show in Tucson a few months ago, and Adrian Belew played that solo perfectly!!

Nope, and I'm an idiot for not reading the whole line!

Thanks for the eye-opener :-)

Exactly!  Wakeman also appeared on Bowie's "Space Oddity!"

This is a great article, lots of stuff I didn't know!

p.s. the 1970's LP was just to get us started!!

I first heard amazing fretless bassist Percy Jones on Eno's "Another Green World!"  I had to go "Who the F is THAT???"   (look at the lineup....Phil Collins!)

Just the first in mind:

David Gilmour on Pete Townsend White City and Brian Ferry's Boys and Girls
Yes on Wakeman's Six Wives
Mel Collins with al lot of people, Camel and Clannad in particular.
Bono vocals on Macalla , same album as Mel
Jon Anderson on Heaven and Hell before Jon and Vangelis
Steve Rothery live with Tangerine Dream
Viv Mc Auliffe on The Geese and The Ghost
Troy Donohan with Mostly Autumn
Marius Duda with Iamthemorning

A curiosity: Ted "Jesus Christ" Neeley on Dead Ringer, the second Meat Loaf album.

Curiosity killed a cat, Schroedinger only half.
