A little more about the collaboration album between myself and Mikael - so far we have 25 minutes of music, it seems to us like nothing either us have done before. Mikael is taking care of all guitars (since he's at least 100 times better than me), and I'm playing keyboards, percussion and doing orchestrations, both of us singing. It's pretty dark stuff, in a way heavy music with no heavy metal elements. (-;

On a related note, the track I wrote for the originally planned Akerfeldt/Wilson collaboration all those years ago when it was going to be more metal  orientated, "Cut Ribbon", is scheduled to finally appear on the next SW solo album (shaping up to be a very diverse double CD). Steve Hackett just played some fantastic guitar on a track for that one too.

According to the Finnish rock mag Soundi, Portnoy will not take part in this project. "This material simply doesn't need a drummer. It has got nothing to do with metal for example", said Åkerfeldt, translated from English to Finnish by Soundi and back to English by me Tongue

Not predictable?  Au contraire, my friends, with SW's track record of doing different styles out side PT I'd argue it's completely predictable that it isn't metal.

I'm not sure if I'll like this. These days, I like Åkerfeldt pretty much for his growling (though, he's a great guitarist too). I'm actually not a fan of his clean singing style, but let's see...

Guys, does it matter? Portnoy is a great drummer but there's plenty of other greats out there also!

A more recent tweet has described the project as "Nothing like Damnation either, something new and pretty experimental. Coming on nicely so some time in 2011 for sure."

Portnoy is a technically proficient drummer, but in my opinion an inferior artist to Wilson and Akerfeldt (Portnoy has always struck me as more of a fan than an artist). The fact that they haven't mentioned him, combined with his work schedule, is probably a big sign that he won't take a major role in this, if any role at all.

No offense, but that's complete bullsh*t, and shows how little you know about Portnoy as a music fan and as a musician.

Are you familiar about his drumming in Transatlantic? Or in all of Neal Morse's albums post-2003? How about Yellow Matter Custard, which was a one-off Beatles tribute band including Portnoy? If you want to call any of those projects metal, you're basically insane. Also keep in mind that Portnoy's biggest 4 influences (he's said this many times) are The Who, The Beatles, Frank Zappa, and Led Zeppelin, none of which are metal.

Yes, Portnoy is very prolific in metal circles, but he's not strictly a metalhead.

I am very happy to see Portannoy not part of this. He tends to be one of the most over-bearing drummers around. Sorry fans.

I would like to see Danny Carey in this project though.

SW mentioned in a May interview that he and Mikael recorded 15 minutes of music, and it will be a very dark experimental rock album.

Yeah, and if it's an electronic sort-of album, I think the name fits quite well.

Christ, that's a  truly cheesy metal name for a band that claims to not be metal.

Yeah the "don't expect any metal" comment isn't indicative of Portnoy's involvement or lack thereof.

But Portnoy's incredibly busy schedule most likely is.

I just don't see where he'd fit this between drumming for DT, Avenged Sevenfold, Transatlantic, and all the various other sideprojects he already does.

Shame really. The Portnoy involvement is what really shook things up for me. If it's just swilson and Akerfeldt then they might as well call the project "Damnation 2".

Portnoy does plenty of things that aren't metal. Transatlantic, anyone?

I'm actually glad it's not metal.  That'd be too predictable.
