No big surprises here...
Robert Fripp (duh) Steve Hackett (I love his classical guitar work almost as much as his electric) Steve Howe (he created such a unique style) Brian May (live he rocks like crazy but I love his multi-layered-harmony studio creations best) David Gilmour (makes it cry and sing like no one else)

Has no-one mentioned Lindsey Buckingham? Surely unique among guitarists as well as being incredibly good. Perhaps not fashionable/hip enough for some?

How about 5 exquisite guitarists that I happen to adore at the moment? Greatest is a word, which has taken on quite a surreal taste...
Michio Kurihara - Ghost, Boris etc.
Reine Fiske - Dungen, The Amazing, Morte Macabre, Paatos etc
Manuel Gottsching - Ash Ra Tempel, Ashra etc
Ole Fick - Burnin Red Ivanhoe
Connie Veit - Gila, Popol Vuh

There are some very strange choices. Again, purely down to personal taste rather than objective criticism.
